The Position
2024 Summer Intern - Instrument Development Electrical Engineer
Department Summary
Instrument development focuses on all instrument hardware design with a focus on meeting specified requirements to satisfy our customers needs. New and existing products are constantly being created/updated to improve function and/or aid in manufacturability. The instrument designs are considered to be highly complex electro-mechanical devices that require diverse skill sets and team collaboration to ensure the best quality. The Instrument Development department routinely works with many other departments throughout the company to ensure design outputs also satisfy internal stakeholder expectations.
This internship position is located in Tucson, AZ on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Learns to use company concepts, policies, and procedures, familiar with and follows standard practices
Normally receives detailed directions on all work
Makes suggestions to improve work processes. Assists in producing patentable inventions
Works on projects of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
Participates in technical team activities
Presents and discusses data within the group
Monitors work to ensure quality and continuously promote Quality First Time
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship
Learn data-driven decision-making
Acquire Electrical and Electronics Engineering design methodologies and best practices
Become advanced in analytical techniques and best practices
Gain understanding in multiple aspects of Design Control relating to Electrical Engineering: Requirements, Risk Management, Detailed Design, Simulations, Prototyping, Integration, Testing and Release
Ownership of challenging and impactful projects.
Who You Are (Required)
Required education:
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student)
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)
Required majors:
Electrical or Electronics Engineering or related field
Required skills:
Knows basic and some specialized engineering techniques
Familiar with searching technical literature
Skilled with use of word processing, spreadsheets, graphical and presentation software applications
Previous experience in the job duties listed, either through coursework or industry/academia
Participation in student organizations and/or other leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications
Desire GPA 3.0 or higher
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Hands-on ability/experience with electro-mechanical and small-scale fluidic/pneumatic systems preferred
Strong understanding of engineering principles and concepts
Completed at least 2 years of college/university to be eligible for the program
