The Position

The Digital Workflow summer intern program at Roche Pharma Service has been developed to provide students with a fun yet rewarding summer through hands-on experience and numerous opportunities to network with other interns as well as employees in the organization. Additionally, we help our students meet their career development and educational goals while potentially building a future with the Roche organization. Leveraging the education you received already, we hope to give you an opportunity to grow and develop with us! 

This internship position is located in Tucson, Arizona,  On-site.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on novel tissue-based in vitro diagnostic assay development and image analysis on the stained slides from human tumor tissue specimens.

  • You will be involved in assay development and image analysis using brightfield and/or fluorescent microscopy scanners, and work with scientists to explore machine learning/deep learning based methods. 

  • Additionally, the selected intern will be asked to participate in various intern activities, which may include workshops with leaders in the organization, our mentor program, and our Poster Symposium among other activities.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/July 2024 (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required) 

  • Knowledge on tissue-based in vitro diagnostic assays

  •  Image analysis on bright-field and fluorescence images

  •  Exploration on using machine learning and deep learning tools 

Required Education:  You meet one of the following criteria:

  • BS, MS or PhD student in the area of biomedical sciences, and/or biomedical engineering related fields.  

Preferred Qualifications. 

  • A passion for developing technologies to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. 

  • A passion for applying state-of-art machine learning methods to solve challenging practical medical problems. 

  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined and ability to work independently. 

  • Ability to perform fast prototyping and testing iterations and thinking outside the box to solve practical problems.

  • Solid knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desired: 1) tissue morphology knowledge, 2) use of image analysis platforms, 3) data analysis experience

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $21.00 - $55.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits. 

2024 Summer Intern - Infectious Diseases Research and Early Development

Department Summary

In Infectious Disease Research and Early Development, we are engaged in designing molecular diagnostic tests for infectious diseases, working on early product concepts, novel technologies and critical research questions in the field. 

We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join our team. The intern will work closely with researchers in our department and in computational biology. They will apply computational biology, microbial and disease ecology principles to analyze pathogen-specific biomarkers and contribute to the development of novel approaches in the molecular diagnostics field. The intern will also have the opportunity to interact with other departments (including Medical Affairs, Development, and Business) and learn about clinical applications of infectious disease diagnostics.

This internship position is located inPleasanton, on site.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze large genomic and metagenomic datasets using bioinformatics tools and pipelines

  • Apply computational biology and ecology principles to study sequence-based pathogen specific molecular biomarkers and do phylogenetic analysis

  • Present research findings to internal research teams and other stakeholders

- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree

Required majors:

Currently enrolled or recent graduate in computational biology or a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, microbiology, microbial ecology, infectious diseases, engineering)

Required skills: 

  • Strong background in computational biology and bioinformatics

  • Demonstrated programming skills in Python including data analysis packages such as pandas and jupyter notebooks

  • Knowledge in these area is highly desired: microbial ecology, molecular evolution, disease ecology principles

Other Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Familiarity with experimental methods such as PCR 

  • Experience in bioinformatics pipeline development

  • Experience in data-driven algorithm development

  • Experience with genomic and metagenomic data analysis and familiarity with structured biological databases
