Job description
IBM Research – Ireland is seeking excellent candidates with a proven research and innovation track record in one or more of the following areas:
· System software for bare-metal and/or virtualised computing (VMs/containers) on high-end and/or SoC-based architectures,
· High-performance data-intensive analytics and runtimes (e.g., Spark) and architecture-aware runtime/optimization thereof,
· Accelerated, many-core or energy-efficient computing (e.g., runtimes and middleware, autotuning/scaling, virtualization, scheduling) The ideal candidate should possess deep conceptual understanding and proven hands-on rapid prototyping experience on market-grade platforms, covering one or more of the above areas and stack(s), as to be manifested by: proven track record in past research/industrial involvement, recent publications in top-tier international peer-reviewed scientific research venues or generated intellectual property. Candidates are also expected to have demonstrated the ability to lead own research agendas as part of team research roadmaps and projects and successfully execute them to completion, as part of a team effort.
As member of a leading research organization, the successful candidate will be expected through liaising with global IBM Research Labs, IBM Business Units and scientific/academic partners to:
· Develop and constantly maintain a deep technical understanding of state of the art, product offerings and corporate strategy in her core and related areas,
· Identify technical challenges and contribute to research roadmaps towards significant advancement of existing products and/or creation of innovative approaches targeting market disruption,
· Devise innovative solutions as part of research plan execution and evaluate them through the creation of proof-of-concept prototypes,
· Protect intellectual property (e.g. patent) - where appropriate - and
· Communicate the outcome and impact of her research, both internally, e.g. through demos, and externally, through publications in top-tier scientific conferences and journals. We are inventing, prototyping and evaluating novel solutions for next-generation cloud/edge datacenters and data-centric system software/middleware. Required Qualifications
· Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related, on topics around the areas/disciplines outlined above
· Demonstrated ability to formulate problems derived from real-world use-cases and to mobilize/adapt own skills and expertise to collaborate on creating and communicating high impact solutions
· Demonstrated ability to evaluate and showcase research outcome through experimental work, particularly through creation of prototypes by configuring large-scale server/networking/storage infrastructures and/or by deploying research prototypes within staging production-grade infrastructures (e.g. clusters and/or cloud datacenters)
· Ability to apply research and technical skills across infrastructure “boundaries” (from bare-metal HPC to Cloud to Mobile) and in collaboration with teams working higher up the stack (middleware/application teams)
· Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team, across multi-disciplinary worldwide teams and across IBM Research Labs and Divisions, work closely with application-domain experts
· Strong academic record with publications in top peer-reviewed scientific conferences and journals
· Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written
Preferred Qualifications
· Prior experience within an industrial environment (including internship(s) in industrial entities)
· Prior exposure to intellectual property protection
