Post Doc Research Scientist - Computational Biology/Bioinformatics
We are seeking a Post-doctoral researcher with proven track record in one or more of our core focus areas to join the IBM Research team in UK. As part of the IBM research team, you will engage in a number of industrial and academic collaborations to be a part of cutting edge, industrially relevant, high-impact research projects. The role provides you an opportunity to develop interdisciplinary, translational research programs for UK life sciences industry. You will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment and contribute to high quality publications, public engagements, and commercialisation of the resulting digital assets.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in fields such as Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biology, Biostatistics, Computer science (with focus on statistical modelling, distributed computing, advanced visualization techniques), or related disciplines. The candidate is expected to have a background in application of computational techniques for understanding omics datasets and should have a relevant list of publications to support their candidacy. The desired focus areas for this post are –
· Applied bioinformatics with programming skills, and/or
· Development and application of statistical techniques in context of omics datasets, and/or
· Adaptation of distributed emerging technologies like Spark, Hadoop, NoSQL for life sciences research, and/or
· Advanced visualization techniques and analytics for life sciences research

You will be a part of a growing research team at IBM Research UK. IBM Research UK is located within the Hartree Centre at the Sci-Tech Daresbury Laboratory (STFC) at Warrington where the role is based.
The desired skills and experience for the post are
· PhD in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Mathematics or similar discipline
· Knowledge of commonly used bioinformatics tools, file formats, data standards, and databases
· Experience of working on omics datasets
· Experience applying statistical techniques, modelling and machine learning approaches for inference and prediction in context of biological datasets
· Intermediate programming skills in Python, R, C++, Shell scripts etc.
· Experience with data visualization libraries and tools like D3.js, Blender, Python libraries etc.
· Experience of working on distributed platforms and databases like Spark, Hadoop, Neo4j, MongoDB etc.
· Experience working on collaborative interdisciplinary research programs
· Effective communication skills and a team player.
