Job description

The Materials characterization team at IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA has an immediate opening for an experienced TEM/SEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy/Scanning Electron Microscopy) sample preparation engineer/scientist.

The work will include preparing high quality TEM and SEM samples by mechanical means, such as tripod polishing, dimpling, and ion-milling, for examination in a JEOL ARM Cs-corrected TEM/STEM. Experience with Gatan instrumentation (PIPS2, PECS, Ilion) is preferred. Responsibilities also include maintenance of all preparation equipment and ordering of required consumables and supplies. Duties will also include FIB (Focused Ion Beam) and SEM for TEM sample preparation as well as advanced analytical work such as EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis), FIB cross-sectioning, and 3D acquisition and reconstruction.

This position requires the engineer to work independently, developing creative characterization solutions to a wide variety of sample types. Successful candidates will perform meticulous sample preparation, carefully document the process, and work well with other team members to help answer challenging analysis problems.

· Mechanical TEM sample preparation (tripod polishing, dimpling, ion-milling)
· Mechanical SEM preparation (tripod polishing, slope-cutting)
· Pre-FIB polishing for backside and complex cross-sectional views
· FIB/SEM/TEM prep for Helios 400S Nanolab and G4 systems
·  EDX in FIB/SEM
·  3D FIB milling and reconstruction · Optical microscopy including training of new users
· Maintenance of Gatan sample preparation equipment (PIPS2, PECS, Ilion)
· Maintenance of Allied High Tech polishers, low-speed diamond saws, and evaporative carbon-coater
· Continual development and refinement of new and existing sample preparation procedures
· Ordering of all preparation lab supplies
