IBM Cloud Databases - Backend Software Engineer (m/w/x)
Internship GERMANY Infra / Networks / Telecom
Job description
The IBM Cloud Databases team mission is to provide and operate Databases as a Service in IBM's Public Cloud. Databases for PostgreSQL, EnterpriseDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, Datastax, etcd, and MongoDB and Messages for RabbitMQ make up the family of services which are hosted in multiple IBM Cloud data centers all around the globe. As a rapidly growing offering, the team will also focus on bringing in new, secure, and compliant data service offerings (like MySQL) to market and thus expanding the breath of databases offered on our platform.
We are now looking for an enthusiastic Software Engineer to join our team. A successful candidate will have a passion for both SW development, along with a proven record and desire to work in an environment that follows the principle of: you build it you run it. You will drive and implement new requirements and improvements into the product, including new feature requests, integrating new technologies into the service, the orchestration to stand up new components, adding or enhancing our use of Kubernetes and associated operators, or changes to resolve or mitigate commonly hit operational issues. We work from a prioritized list of customer and business requests and form cross-functional feature delivery squads in charge of delivering the product end-to-end, through design, planning, execution, deployment, testing, monitoring, alerting, documentation, and ongoing operations and support.
The IBM Cloud Data Services team has been at the forefront of Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) SW development for the last 5 years. We operate in a true agile, continuous delivery model utilizing the latest tools and technologies. When something isn't working, we fix it, improve it, and then apply the knowledge learnt. You will have the opportunity to learn every aspect of running a 24x7 Cloud Service and will gain highly-marketable skills in the process.
You will join a team that owns the end-to-end delivery into production, from requirements gathering through design and implementation through production operations. The concept is: You build it, you run it. The services must meet stringent availability targets 24x7 in all datacenters across the globe. As a member of the data services team you will join the primary on-call rotation (includes weekends) where you will be the primary responder for day to day operational issues. Working closely with our worldwide teams, this provides a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the latest database technologies. You will follow runbooks to resolve such issues and use your troubleshooting and analytical skills to diagnose or troubleshoot platform or Data Service issues.
You need to be collaborative, able to handle responsibility, and love learning new techniques and tools. There is no requirement to be expert in any one language, but knowledge of Go, Java, Python are useful as well as Docker, Ansible, Jenkins, Orchestration and other cloud technologies such as Kubernetes. Specific skills in database technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, etcd, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, MongoDB, MySQL, Cassandra, and/or Apache Kafka would also be useful, but not required.
The key requirement is to have a passion for developing a High quality, Highly Available service. Engineers that have been successful in this area typically have:
· A solid engineering underpinning to understand what High Availability means.
· Embrace the "you develop it, you operate it" culture - which means if it goes wrong you will be called out to fix it.
· Have a passion to keep up to speed with the new technologies in the Agile CI/CD development process, Cloud and Data Services space.
· Are great team workers that are willing to turn their hand to whatever the highest priority issue of the day happens to be.
