Start and end dates for this Internship are during Summer 2024 (3 months) at IBM Research. At IBM Research, we invent things that matter to the world. Your Role and Responsibilities
This is for a 2024 summer internship with the following start dates: May - August or June - September for quarter system schools.
The Exploratory Physical Sciences program at IBM Research is seeking candidates who will contribute to foundational research topics in Applied Physics and Material Science. Currently, positions are open to 2 distinct areas: New Materials for Information Technology and AI for Physics and Materials.
Candidates should have basic knowledge in one or more of the following skills:
• A background in Physics, Material Sciences, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
• Track record of co-authoring technical reports and publications
• Programming experience in scientific computing
• Experience in several of the following:
o Solid state physics
o Topological materials, preferably topological semimetals
o Transport physics
o First-principles calculation
o Density functional theory
o Quantum transport
o AI/ML assisted materials screening
o Device testing and analysis
o Thin-film growth and optimization
o Materials characterization
o Automation of high-throughput data acquisition and analysis
o Semiconductor devices
o Electrical engineering
o Instrument building

Candidates must be willing to work in any of the following locations:
At this time, an in-person program is planned, and candidates would need to work in the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
• Candidates should possess an undergraduate degree in Physics, Material Sciences, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering, and be pursuing a graduate degree in same
• Candidates should be pursuing their Ph.D. degree
• Track record of co-authoring technical reports and publications
• Experience in one or more of the following:
o solid state physics
o transport measurements and/or cryogenic/variable-temperature experiments
o Knowledge about device fabrication and layout design
o First principles calculations
o Thin-Film Growth
o Material Characterization
o Programming experience in scientific computing (Python, C, C++, Matlab)
o Experience with applying AI models for various tasks
o Experience in validation of AI models against sample data

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
• Knowledge in topological materials, quantum transport physics, or semiconductor physics
• Knowledge of Density functional theory, Quantum transport, or AI/ML assisted materials screening
