Description of the job

A vacancy for a Post Design Support Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Hawthorn, Wiltshire.

As a PDS engineer you will form part of the Skynet 5 Post Design Services team. This team are responsible for 4th Line Support to the Skynet 5 Core System, and M2 services at the SGS's and the provision of Network support to project delivery, installation of services across all Airbus Defence & Space (UKGC) owned sites and at customer sites (as applicable). This role also provides long term service design and implementation advice to the implementation teams. The role will typically engage at the preparation for FsDR stage of the project and will be a key member of the Service Management process through Service Gates 1 and 2 (Phase 7 and 8) Travel is expected to the Airbus Defence & Space Ground Station installations and offices on a frequent basis. As part of the role there may also be a requirement to travel to customer installations overseas.

The successful candidate will need to be eligible to gain UK SC Security Clearance to undertake the role.

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

·  Implement & test the service (including provision of oversight for implementation activities). PDS engineers are expected to support installation at any of our customer's sites. As a result overseas travel may be required.
·  Support to the OR process ensuring that new requirements are understood in the context of the current system. Must be part of the solution to the problem using expertise to drive to a satisfactory conclusion.
·  Provision of specialist 24/7 on-call network support on a rotation basis within a team.
·  Ownership of assigned on-going fault investigations liaising with customers and suppliers as appropriate.
·  Problem diagnosis and recommending solutions.
·  Review and feedback of user and system requirements in the service requirements specification, ensuring support requirements and strategies are catered for.
·  Carrying out VV&T (Validation, Verification & Test) on delivered services and OR's.
·  Review of test plans and specifications,
·  Creation and ownership of all relevant documentation to support the service in its final operational state.
·  Support the Early Life support process for a service as it transitions into operations between the service installation at customer site, and pre Phase 4.
·  Delivery of the Password Management policy.
·  Implementation of firmware and software patches on the network elements in accordance with the Patch Management Policy.

Within the boundaries of the assigned activity scope the role holder will be expected to work under own initiative and drive to successful delivery of all engineering inputs to the activity cycle.
They will be expected to be able to handle multiple tasks and be prepared to rationalise their time and work with the activity leads to optimise their efforts to project and individual priorities.
The role holder will be an accomplished engineer who will act with confidence and authority.
As such it is expected that this role will be the originator of technical solutions derived through own and team expertise together with consultation with other groups including the SDA and other Design teams.
It is likely that the role holder is an accomplished problem solver, highly analytical with a breadth and depth of technical expertise to draw on.

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

·  Engineering degree or equivalent
·  CCNP/Juniper/Cisco
·  Must be IP qualified to Professional level.
·  Must have knowledge of ATM, TCP/IP as well as synchronous and asynchronous communications protocols and Nortel Passport and similar switch equipment.
·  Knowledge of satellite communications systems.
·  Knowledge and use of DCAP, DC2K, mini Catapan, Ectocryp etc.
·  Knowledge of X21, RS530 and serial communication protocols.
·  Good report writing and general communication skills.
·  Must be analytical and able to diagnose and recommend problem resolution.
