Description of the job

The optical communications team within Airbus' Central Research and Technology (CTO) delivers cutting edge research in Free Space Optical Communication (FSOC).

Over the years, the team has demonstrated ground-breaking technologies to establish high-speed communications links (1+ Gbps) with aircraft in flight using laser beams.

The team is currently recruiting for a 1 year fixed term, full-time intern to support existing activities in research and development. The successful candidate will be working on challenging optical communications research projects.

The work will include (but not be limited to) the calculation of link budgets, working on research prototypes and attending field trials with drone mounted optical communication systems.

Tasks & accountabilities

You will work closely with team members across a variety of projects and topics as required and be expected to contribute to technical analysis, discussions, reports, and demonstrations.

Whilst a good understanding of optical communications is expected, it is understood that many of the topics within the scope of research at Airbus are innovative and therefore support from our experts will be provided.

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company's success, reputation and sustainable growth.

The selected intern will be given the opportunity to become the team's pilot for a DJI Matrice 600 multi-copter UAV. Travel may sometimes be required to take part in lab tests and field experiments.

Required skills

You must be an undergraduate for the full duration of the placement studying towards a degree in Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Physics.

·  Should be highly motivated and possess good technical writing and presentation skills

·  Should have an understanding of Optical Communications and its principles

·  Should have a good knowledge of Communication Theory

·  Experience of Electronics / Software Engineering

·  An ability to program in Verilog and C/C++ would be a plus
