Airbus Defence & Space Intelligence is a leading provider of optical and radar satellite imagery, geographic information products, software and services delivering geographic information solutions into both private and public sector organisations worldwide. We offer a comprehensive product and services portfolio covering the entire geographic information services value chain - data acquisition and processing, imagery analysis and interpretation, hosting and delivery of large datasets, as well as offering GIS development and consultancy.

We have an exciting new vacancy in the Airbus Leicester office for a Geospatial Applications Developer. You will be working in an office that's close to the M1, is accessible by public transport and has parking on-site. You will be joining a close-knit team of 4, responsible for improving the processing and analysis of remotely sensed airborne or satellite imagery and other geospatial data, for a range of commercial and public sector applications. Datasets will be covering the application areas of oil & gas, infrastructure, highways, agriculture, power supply and railways.

The successful candidate may need to gain UK Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.

Desired profile

Tasks & accountabilities

The position lies within a small R&D group alongside other developers, with working links to similar R&D teams in France and Germany. Although Leicester-based, the role will include support to colleagues based in our Guildford office.

As an Applications Developer you will be working in the area of cutting-edge, new geospatial analysis techniques - creating and validating prototype new solutions and their implementation on either in-house workstations, Cloud platforms, or other delivery solutions. These applications are aimed at providing faster and more intelligent analysis of imagery or image-derived information, to reflect the increasing data volumes now being encountered.
You will therefore gain experience in different fields, as they arise, within image analysis, computer vision, data management, data mining, machine learning and cloud computing.

Required skills

To be successful for this Geospatial Applications Developer role, you need to have the following skills / experience:

¤ An analytical and numerical background such as Computer Science / Computer Systems Engineering / Information Technology / Maths / Physics / Sciences / Computer Vision or related subjects.
¤ An enjoyment of programming, founded on strong numeracy and developmental skills, and being able to exploit published scientific literature if needed
¤ Experience (Commercial / Academic / Hobby) using Python and related libraries - ideally NumPy, Scikit-Image or Scikit-Learn

Any experience / knowledge of the following would be desirable but NOT essential:
¤ Experience working on complex datasets
¤ Web delivery of data and services
¤ Understanding of the principles and applications of remote sensing/Earth Observation (e.g. optical and SAR Imagery)
¤ Other relevant open source software tools, such as OpenCV, TensorFlow, or similar
¤ Advanced image analysis algorithms, e.g. from Machine Learning
