To connect the Electronic Control Units, ECU:s there is an equally increasing in Vehicle Communication need, utilizing several Communication Protocols and networks. The increasing Communication needs as well as the Vehicle length offers a challenging environment where some efficient Communication Protocols are close to it's physical limitations.
Volvo buses want to evaluate possible technical solutions to mitigate the risk of Communication wiring harness coming close to "out of specification cable lengths" for preferred communication protocol, e.g. CAN or Ethernet. In the market there are some alternatives to evaluate, which might provide safe, robust and cost-efficient solutions, meeting various important perspectives like communication speed, arbitration and gateway delays, cost and weight. Another dimension of the challenge is to evaluate consequences and challenges to meet various legislation and standards like ISO 26262 and UN 156 (Functional Safety and Product Cybersecurity)
