Master Thesis Position: Automatic Intersection Finding and Deadlock Prevention

The Driver team focuses on developing cutting-edge algorithms for trajectory planning, vehicle control, and auxiliary functions tailored for trucks and machinery in quarry and mining environments. A key enabler for our software's reliability is efficient testing methods, allowing us to detect issues early in the development cycle and ensure safe system behavior. We utilize a variety of test environments with different levels of granularity to validate our solutions. 

 

Thesis Scope 

As a thesis student, you will join a team where collaboration, learning, and drive are the backbone in everything we do. You will surround yourself with the nicest people energized by creating impact in everyday opportunities such as connecting with a colleague, forming an innovation, or implementing a software feature. 

 

The scope of the thesis is to study automated intersection finding algorithms, which will describe the areas of an autonomously operated site that has restricted traffic flow. The reason for restricting the area is due to a limited road surface meaning that vehicles can't meet head-on. The important problems to solve are an efficient algorithm to find these zones and then given a setup of intersection zones analyze them to find any potential “deadlock” configurations. Mitigating and/or identifying potential deadlock configurations is key to enhancing the overall efficiency and safety of the autonomous transport solution. 

 

Tasks and Expected Outcomes 

You will review literature and interview experts to gather insights into state-of-the-art testing techniques and domain-specific knowledge. You will also be expected to develop and implement algorithms for intersection finding and deadlock prevention and validate these algorithms through simulations and potentially real-world testing. 

 

The thesis could be structured as follows: 

· 
Literature Review: Review existing testing techniques, focusing on automated intersection finding and deadlock prevention in autonomous vehicle systems. This will include an analysis of current methodologies and their limitations. 

· 
Application of Testing Techniques: Understand the specific requirements of our use cases and apply the reviewed techniques to our autonomous systems. This will involve adapting existing methods to fit the unique constraints of our operational environments. 

· 
Development of New Testing Techniques: Leverage domain knowledge to develop new algorithms for intersection finding and deadlock prevention. This will include designing, implementing, and testing these algorithms to ensure they meet existing standards. 

 

Candidate Profile

We believe a strong candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

Master’s student in Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field. 

· 
Familiarity with modern software development methods. 

· 
Proficiency in programming, ideally with experience in Python.
