Position Description

Background of thesis project

The aim of this project is to develop an automatic control strategy for a force gearbox linear hydraulic actuator focused on energy consumption minimization of excavators. The target is to develop a controller that optimizes the selection of actuator force levels for different working cycles.

Description of thesis work

The students will work with modelling, simulation, control, optimisation and machine learning to accomplish the controller development. This controller will be implemented and tested in an excavator arm test bench.

The students are preferably skilled in dynamic simulation, control theory, fluid power systems and machine learning.

The main activities are:
·  Improve the dynamic simulation model of the excavator arm and perform its validation.
·  Define suitable working cycles together with the supervisor at Volvo CE.
·  Design an optimised control strategy with optimisation and machine learning in simulation.
·  Implement, evaluate, and improve the control strategy in the test bench.
·  Compare a conventional excavator to one with the force gearbox linear actuator in simulation. This thesis is part of a research project between Volvo CE and Linköping University. The thesis main part will be performed at Division of Fluid and Mechatronic Systems at Linköping University with tight collaboration with supervisor at Volvo CE.
