C'est pour répondre aux besoins de ses clients industriels (alimentation, pharmacie, chimie du végétal, nutrition animale, cosmétique, papier carton) que la filiale Tereos Starch & Sweeteners Europe a été créée. Avec nos 1 700 salariés, répartis dans 9 usines en France, en Belgique, en Espagne, au Royaume-Uni et en Italie, elle regroupe les activités de transformation des céréales (blé et maïs) et des pommes de terre en amidon et produits sucrants du Groupe Tereos en Europe.

Tereos is the third largest sugar group in the world and the third biggest player in the European starch market. Sugars and cereal derived sweeteners count for more than half of the Group’s turnover. The R&D strategy supports Tereos in its ambition to strengthen its leadership position as a supplier of innovative nutritional and sustainable sweetening solutions. 

To strengthen our carbohydrate development team, we are looking for an enzyme technologist. The person will be part of the Corporate Technology team and report to the Carbohydrate Innovation Team Leader. In your role as enzyme technology expert, you will lead applied and basic research activities leading to new product and process developments.

Vos activités au quotidien ...

The following are roles & responsibilities for the Carbohydrate Innovation Scientist, enzyme technology:

- Support the R&D team in attaining short-term and long-term development goals;
- Leverage internal and external technology capabilities to develop products that meet customer needs and provide product line growth;
- Utilise research capabilities and know-how to develop new products and improve existing products and processes;
- Execute research: prototype development; product characterization; laboratory, pilot and industrial trials;
- Plan the work of lab technicians: define protocols, plan and follow-up their lab & pilot tasks, evaluate the results of their work;
- Contribute to the safe and sustainable lab and pilot management;
- Build expertise related to your product group, review scientific literature and patent publications, connect with external network;
- Gather the available and incoming information for new ideas, to evaluate them, to report exploratory results and to translate ideas in new project proposals;
- Support the innovation stage gate process: brainstorming and ideation sessions, feasibility, concept development, market launch;
- Support the product innovation team leader in preparation of project portfolio review meetings;
- Act as a project leader or a team member in (cross)department projects;
Provide written and verbal reports of research activities, participate in R&D and inter-departmental meetings;

Your area of expertise is:

 - Carbohydrate and sugar chemistry in general, including structure and function analysis of oligosaccharides

- Enzymology in particular: enzyme activity, enzyme structure and function, basic protein biochemistry

- Process chemistry, focus on enzyme catalysis, reaction modeling

- Sugars, sweeteners, carbohydrates: functionality and behaviour in food systems

- Research project management

- Statistical experimental design, data interpretation

The ideal candidate holds an advanced scientific degree (PhD), or at minimum a Master degree in bio-
chemistry, bio-engineering, food science or a related scientific field and brings minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience.

The candidate will have a strong background in carbohydrate chemistry and enzymology and brings prior experience in developing enzyme solutions to develop new food ingredients or improve existing ones. The individual has experience in scaling up enzyme catalyzed processes and transfer of technology to manufacturing.

The candidate will combine strong scientific knowledge with technical skills and a hands-on approach. Project management skills and being able to drive all aspects of product development from an innovative idea to market launch are required. The ability to manage and priorities multiple projects with complex scientific information requiring high attention to detail and intense deadline

A good understanding of the business environment is essential. The ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects requiring high attention to detail and intense deadlines will contribute to success in the role.

The person has experience working in a collaborative team-oriented environment and is at ease to interact and collaborate with all functional levels and functions. The ability to present ideas effectively and to communicate with all levels of management is required.

The person is a team player with energy and drive, and a results-oriented approach.

Votre futur environnement de travail ...

The position is based in Aalst, Belgium, where Tereos’ Global New Product and Process Development department is located. Traveling to the Tereos Campus Europe in France, the production sites and the external partners is needed.
