The objective of this VIE is to strengthen and develop the optical and optronics capabilities of Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia.
This mission supports the creation and growth of the Australian Optronics Centre of Excellence by contributing to the development of optical benches and laser testing capabilities. The VIE will participate in the transfer of technical know-how from the French parent company to the Australian entity, while supporting local engineering and testing activities.
As part of the Engineering team, the VIE Optronics Engineer will contribute to the following activities:
• Contribute to electro-optical design studies and knowledge management activities, including architecture definition, technology trade-offs, and performance evaluation for optical test benches.
• Support the definition of high-level system requirements and their decomposition into subsystem specifications.
• Participate in technology assessments and support the selection of suitable solutions across optics, sensors, electronics, and mechanics.
• Work closely with experts from the French parent company to integrate specialist knowledge into the local Australian capability.
• Support the execution of acquisition programs by reviewing technical data related to optical performance, including maintenance work instructions and user manuals, and by contributing to design reviews, technical documentation, and compliance assessments.
• Contribute to the development and execution of laser testing activities.
• Depending on the programs under execution, participate in optronics design activities.
• Contribute to knowledge transfer and support the training of local employees on optical and optronic systems.
This mission offers strong exposure to real industrial projects in an international and multicultural defence environment.

This is a VIE position, so you will need to be eligible to this type of contract :
1 - Age: You must be between 18 and 28 years old when applying and registering on the Mon Volontariat International website. Departure must occur before your 29th birthday.
2 - Nationality: The V.I.E program is open to nationals of any European Economic Area (EEA) country, not just French citizens. The EEA includes EU countries, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Iceland, and Norway.
3 - National Service: French nationals (or dual nationals) must comply with national service requirements, including providing a defense ID number if under 25. EEA nationals must meet their country's national service obligations.
4 - Criminal Record: You must have a clean criminal record; bulletin n°2 must not include any incompatible mentions.
5 - Medical Fitness: You must be medically fit and provide a valid medical certificate.

We are seeking a technically strong and versatile engineer with a background in electro-optical systems.
Education
• Master's degree (or equivalent) in Optics, Optronics, Physics Engineering, or a related technical discipline
Experience
• Initial professional experience in electro-optical or optronic systems, including academic projects, internships, or graduate-level experience.
• Strong academic foundation in optical system design and system-level engineering.
Technical skills
• Fundamentals of optical system design and performance analysis.
• Basic knowledge of optical sensors and focal plane arrays (e.g. MWIR, SWIR, LWIR).
• Familiarity with modelling and simulation tools used in optical or system engineering.
• Interest in laser systems and optical testing environments.
• Ability to contribute to technical documentation and engineering reviews.
Soft skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in an international and multicultural environment.
• Good technical communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Willingness to learn and develop expertise through on-the-job experience.
