Job description

The Athlete Marketing Manager is responsible for developing the Athlete Marketing Strategy which is in line with wider business objectives & strategies (local market needs) while considering Global Sports direction. This includes full portfolio management, developing long term scouting plans and building strong networks in the Australian sports industry for trend and talent identification. In partnership with the Athlete, this role is responsible for developing annual marketing plans for each athlete leveraging projects, self-marketing, activations and commercial trade opportunities. They will have deep knowledge, passion and understanding of sport and be able to relate and support the athlete through understanding their challenges and supporting their successes. Through this understanding they will provide professional support where needed to drive outcomes in performance, marketing and/or communications.

·  ATHLETE MARKETING STRATEGY

Develop the Athlete Marketing Strategy focusing on short and long term goals aligned to strategic priorities. This includes reviewing key sports, identifying the right athletes and delivering on annual portfolio planning exercises.

Continually foster a culture that drives longer term athlete marketing strategies which perform against HQ and local market priorities including portfolio planning, athlete projects and athlete marketing activities.

Development of the scouting and talent identification program through the leverage of a strong sport-performance network among sports institutes, sports scientists, sports universities, trainers, clubs and federations in Australia.

Create and manage a highly credible athlete program through talent identification, scouting, screening and selection of key athletes. All athletes will meet Red Bull criteria of brand personality, performance potential and brand fit.

Leverage the Athlete Marketing Strategy within the business to drive commercial impact, working in collaboration with the sales team to identify opportunities.

 

·  STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT

Collaborate with international & local counterparts to support in development of strong local athlete marketing and communication programs, in particular with the Red Bull Media Network.

Develop strong relationships with athlete partners, industry brands and other key organisations in order to foster potential future partnerships and other relevant leverage opportunities. 

Moderate amounts of travel to priority sporting scenes (core sports and surfing, fitness, running) in order to support the establishment of networks, scouting and brand relevance.

Regularly engage with internal HQ and local departments through both the annual business planning process but also at regular intervals to develop and foster the advocacy of the athlete marketing program and the consumer impact.

·  ANNUAL BUSINESS PLANNING

Manage the athlete marketing portfolio including ongoing optimization through annual target setting across performance and marketing discussions in partnership with the athlete leading into business planning. This includes developing marketing plans in collaboration with other marketing departments as outcomes from these discussions.

Develop and manage in partnership with the athletes, ideation sessions on a regular basis designed to identify project, performance and marketing opportunities.

Develop and regularly review each individual athlete support package consisting of marketing (tools, salary, bonus etc…), communications and performance support, assured through strong relationships designed to maximize the relevant scene impact with the consumer.

 

·  MARKETING LEVERAGE

Establish Red Bull as a functional beverage and innovative brand in sports (athletes, many sport scenes, opinion leaders, sport industry, agencies, media, federations, authorities etc…) by setting up a strong network and driving product education and functional usage.

Strong usage of Red Bull’s global athlete and event portfolio by using international Red Bull athletes nationally and sending national participants (Red Bull athletes or not) to foreign Red Bull activities.

Design and contribute unique stories, interesting topics, new formats and top media content for Red Bull Media House and collaborate on the bigger marketing plans around each athlete.

In partnership with the Red Bull Media Network team, collaborate on delivering the annual business plan including the design of unique athlete stories, project planning, target setting, execution, activation and maximizing consumer impact through the Red Bull Marketing Mix.

Manage all brand appearances for all national athlete activity according to international benchmarks und guidelines.

Work cross functionally and in market to develop, drive and maximize partnership opportunities for the athlete marketing program.

 

·  BUSINESS OPERATIONS

In consultation with the legal team, manage all commercial negotiations and the development of legal agreements aligned to international and local requirements.

Develop and manage the annual budgeting process aligned to the annual business planning process.

Oversee the monthly forecasting and tracking procedures aligned to the annual business plan, in partnership with the Athlete Marketing Specialist.

Oversee the regular updating of the Red Bull SportsNet tool ensuring accurate and regular information updates to users on all athlete related topics including updating event calendars, factsheets, news-postings etc…

Oversee all regular reporting requirements for the athlete team, in partnership with the Athlete Marketing Specialist.

Represent the Sports Marketing team and Athlete Marketing in project work teams, driving cross functional ideation, planning and execution of deliverables.

Studies in sports, science, marketing and/or health.

· 
Minimum five years’ experience working in the sporting industry.

· 
Minimum three years’ experience working with professional athletes.

· 
Minimum three years’ experience in managing individuals including the ability to lead, inspire and engage cross functional teams.

· 
Ability to be highly creative and innovative – particularly in developing projects, athlete activations, celebratory moments, consumer activations and storytelling initiatives.

· 
Highly motivated with a strong degree of initiative to work both as part of a team and autonomously. 

· 
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and rapport quickly and easily both with internal stakeholders but also external stakeholders.

· 
Exceptional time management skills with the ability to develop focus and priorities and also to manage competing priorities.

· 
Highly developed stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence on multiple levels across all stakeholder groups.

· 
Strong leadership skills in leading individuals, cross functional teams and also acting as a role model due to the high profile nature of the role. 

· 
Established network in the sports industry, across athletes, agents, coaches, high performance staff, professional sporting teams, federations and sporting media, with a bias towards athlete management and elite level performance.

· 
Strong understanding of the marketing mix, including developing and managing projects, delivering activations and leveraging relationships for brand outcomes.

· 
Strong understanding of the media landscape across all platforms, including developing marketing plans aligned to asset creation and channel leverage.

· 
Passion for sports and a strong understanding of the sports industry in Australia.

· 
Exceptionally strong communication skills both in written and verbal form, in particular presentation skills.

· 
Strong negotiation skills developed through experience in managing sporting contracts and leveraging partnerships.

· 
Fluent in written and spoken English.
