Job description

about the role

Provide effective legal support to the sales teams in all offices in mainland China for RFP responses, day-to-day customer-facing contract preparation and negotiation and related debt collection matters, in collaboration with and instructions from the Legal Counsel for Greater China / North Asia.

Provide general legal advice and support to other functions in corporate services, real estate & facilities management and also handle the corporate secretarial affairs of the legal entities in mainland China, in collaboration with and instructions from the Legal Counsel for Greater China / North Asia.

Effectively manage all litigation matters and disputes and liaising with outside counsel, including developing and implementing appropriate risk-mitigation strategies in relation to Orange Business Services business operations and activities in mainland China.

In coordination with Orange Business Services global initiatives and programs, provide appropriate advice and training to the China Management Team and the Orange Business Services staff in mainland China on related corporate governance matters.

Manage all intellectual property matters for Orange Business Services in China.

about you

The ideal candidate should have an excellent academic background with a good law degree from a reputable university. He/she should have a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience.  Ideally, he/she should be qualified to practice law in mainland China.

The ideal candidate should have private practice and/or in-house MNC experience in the information technology/telecommunications industry.  Individuals who have worked in an international MNC or law firm (in the IT/telecoms practice) will enjoy a distinct advantage.

In addition, the candidate should ideally have a good working knowledge of the information technology/telecommunications industry, practices, regulations and trends in mainland China.

The candidate should also be experienced in commercial/transactional negotiations, particularly in cross-cultural, cross-border and multi-jurisdictional transactions. 

The candidate must have an excellent command of English and Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written. Drafting in simplified Chinese is a must have.  Proficiency in other languages is also an advantage.

In addition, the candidate should also possess the following skills:

Strategic Thinking and Independent Judgment: Must demonstrate outstanding strategic thinking, independent judgment and demonstrated intellectual prowess; someone who will be motivated by solving complex legal and regulatory issues within short timeframe. Also requires solid experience in handling and responding effectively to controversial issues in the fast-changing telecommunications environment in mainland China.

Critical Thinking and Effective Communication: Ability to work effectively with the Legal Counsel for Greater China / North Asia, as well as members of the Orange Business Services China Management Team with the presence and credibility to develop trust and buy-in for a course of action while upholding high professional standards. Must also possess excellent relationship building and networking skills. Ability to influence and work cross-functionally and strong experience in working on cross-cultural, cross-border and multi-jurisdictional projects and deals.  The successful candidate should be able to describe complex legal and regulatory problems to internal clients in a clear and effective manner.

Problem Solving:  Clear focus and ability to achieve Orange Business Services business goals through proactive, creative and effective legal/regulatory/strategic advice. He/she must also have a keen sense of teamwork and an ability to build trust and respect with other team members across multiple geographies and be able to work independently with minimum supervision. The successful candidate will have an understanding of the dynamics amongst different governmental organisations in mainland China and their impact on the daily business operations and activities in Orange Business Services.
