Main Goal
We are looking for a head of breeding program to oversee our OSR maritime breeding program in Europe. This breeding program includes different activities in a European breeding team within an already established breeding team. This position reports to the Head of OSR Research Europe.
Job description
- Strategy / business orientation:
* To implement the strategy for OSR breeding in the UK in order to provide continues supply of competitive commercial varieties for the UK and European markets.
* To provide technical support and product information to Limagrain marketing, Product Managers and Sales teams.
- Operations:
* Manage and coordinate breeding activities: crossing, nursery selection, trials network, back crossing programme.
* Optimize breeding strategy by fully integrating breeding software, doubled haploids, genomic selection, disease nurseries, fast-cycling schemes.
* Manage the production of appropriate quantities of pure seed for trials and Pre-Basic Seed production
* Manage applications of varieties for Plant Breeders Rights, National List and Recommended List trials in UK.
* Manage the implementation of quality control and Safe working practices throughout the breeding and field operations.
- Science:
* Leverage internal as well as external R&D capabilities to update his/her breeding program and strategy to the newest and most efficient technical innovations.
- People Management:
* Supervise a breeding team. Ensure that all team members follow the company standards (health, safety and environment and other). Promote innovation and maintain high technical and scientific level of his / her team.
* Develop close relationship with OSR breeders operating in other programs as well as all Limagrain Field Seed Research organization
- Finance:
* Prepare and follow budgets and capital investments for the OSR breeding program and appropriately justify any deviations.
- Germplasm licensing and collaboration :
* Lead local collaborations and propose exchanges with public and private partners in line with company standard and protocols.
* Guarantee the FTO of breeding germplasm in collaboration with the germplasm officer.
* To develop and maintain strong relationships with UK and other appropriate Brassica seed merchants and end-users.
* To develop and maintain effective relationships with French and German OSR breeding teams and with statisticians, molecular specialists and pathologists.
Profile
• BSc in Plant Breeding and Genetics, or a closely related field, is required. Qualifications at post-graduate level (MSc or PhD) is desirable but not essential.
• Strong demonstrated knowledge in breeding, genetics, agronomy, and application of modern technologies for improvement of crop species is essential.
• Experience as a plant breeder of OSR or other hybrid crops in a commercial program, is advantageous.
• Knowledge of the target production region, associated biotic and abiotic stresses, and relevant germplasm base would be appreciated.
• Ability to use software for data analyses, management, presentation, and reporting; general competence in statistics and data management is essential.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills are needed.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in managing people and programs is essential.
