Role Summary/Purpose

The Substation Protection and Control Engineer is responsible for all electrical design & coordinating all technical aspects of HV / EHV substation protection & control on assigned projects.

Essential Responsibilities

As the Substation Protection and Control Engineer, you will:

·  Be responsible for design of protection and control schemes for industrial & utility substations and electrical BOP applications including one-lines, three-lines, AC / DC schematics, and relay settings
·  Lead a design team to develop panel and interconnect wiring as well as panel layouts and elevations
·  Evaluate the interoperability, control features, and communication/protocol aspects of protective relays, IED’s, RTU’s for digitization of substations and SCADA
·  Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and control design staff in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems
·  Work with team to meet project specifications, cost control, and schedule objectives
·  Interface with internal and external team members, such as Principal engineers, Project Engineers, Electrical Designers, Physical Designers, Draftsmen, Project managers, and support organizations
·  Perform power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, and transient studies when necessary
·  Train end-users on the theory, operational use, and maintenance of integrated protection and control systems
·  Lead or support factory acceptance testing and site testing and commissioning of P&C panels and Local Control Cubicles
·  Develop outage, cut-over, and testing procedures for FAT and SAT
·  Define processes, procedures, perform RCA’s (Root Cause Analysis), perform corrective actions, and validate process control
·  Support quality initiatives, including aspects of ISO9002
·  Work on development of proposals including: writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, estimating design man-hours and materials, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, directing designers and draftsmen on drawing requirements, and the development of clarifications and exceptions as well as technical responses
Qualifications/Requirements

·  Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited university or college

·  Minimum of 1 year of experience in one or more areas of system protection schemes, relay selection, settings development, operational analysis, communication systems and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

·  Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time. Travel, including international, required for meetings and on-site commissioning tests for customer installations. Must comply with and must comply with all relevant GE company travel and tax policies.
Desired Characteristics

·  Minimum of 3 years of experience in protective relaying applications and analysis
·  Experience in protective relaying coordination and practices
·  Strong understanding of circuit breakers, fuses, circuit switchers, transformers, shunt devices, and other methods / devices used in the control of power flow, detection and isolation of power system faults
·  Excellent computer skills, including automation tools, and familiarity with AutoCAD / Microstation
·  Previous experience in utility protection and control design
·  EIT and willingness to get PE license in United States and to certify drawings
·  Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, and CSA standards
·  Strong understanding of safety, operating, maintenance, and testing practices common to utility substations, transmission, and generation facilities
·  Application and configuration experience with SEL relays
·  SCADA or Substation Physical design experience
·  Project management experience
·  P&C field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting experience
·  Presence in front of customer with demonstrated commercial experience
·  Experience with UCA, GOOSE messaging, IEC 61850, and logic development in protection IED’s
·  Experience with power line carrier and transmission line protection schemes
·  Experience in surge and motor starting studies & applications
·  MSEE in power systems with emphasis on faulted power systems and protective relaying
·  Effective communication and interpersonal skills
·  Customer focus, curiosity and willingness to learn
·  Ability to work in a team environment
