About this Position
The Sub-Section Manager for Lynn Thermal Systems Design is responsible for activities contributing to the design and development of thermal systems related technologies supporting the Lynn Engine programs in the Defense Engines portfolio. This role is for a front-line leader (leader of individual contributors) in the Defense Engines Mechanical Analysis and Thermal Design Engineering Section. Team work scope includes thermal modeling, secondary flow modeling and system design for engines in all phases of their product life cycle. As a people leader, the SSM will also lead activities associated with budget/schedule, talent development, culture, and Lean.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manages a 10+ person team of professional, lead professional, and senior professional engineers as well as purchased services.  Requires specialized knowledge within the function.
  • Influence the development of strategy for the area of responsibility, including control of subsection resources, schedule, and budget planning
  • Work with peer managers to create and execute a holistic strategy for improving the health of the product line team.
  • Interpret simple internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve products, processes or services. Stay informed of industry trends that may inform work.
  • Use high level of judgment to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems in areas of operational, product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Has ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and is able to construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and some external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a decision.
  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity. Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on particular topics. May guide others to consider a different point of view.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely to leadership within Engineering, Sourcing, and Supply Chain divisions and foster a relationship of mutual trust and respect.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, candor, and proactive planning & execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in thermal systems design (TSD) or related disciplines, such as mechanical, aerospace, systems integration.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a program or project leadership role within an engineering environment.

Desired Characteristics

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • 8+ years of experience in thermal systems design (TSD) or related disciplines, such as mechanical, aerospace, systems integration.
  • Prior experience managing teams or large programs with multiple resources
  • Deep practical knowledge and experience with Aerospace product lines and customers
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Must be a collaborative, cooperative, humble, candid, and transparent leader.
