Job Description Summary
The Materials Science & Engineering Sub-Section Manager leads and develops the EMS team to deliver materials science solutions for Aerospace and Aeroderivative engine programs. The team provides end-to-end materials engineering support to internal and external customers spanning expert guidance across functions and the product lifecycle, along with laboratory-based failure analysis services. As part of the Global Engineering Materials Science organization, the Sub-Section Manager aligns local priorities with global needs, strengthens cross-site collaboration, and develops the team’s technical and leadership skills to deliver global impact through technical excellence, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
· Set and lead the materials technology strategy for design, testing, manufacturing, quality, and productivity to meet business and customer objectives.
· Provide overall leadership for GEIQ Materials Applications and Failure Analysis teams, defining roles and responsibilities and fostering a diverse, inclusive, multi-functional culture.
· Represent GEIQ at the Global EMS team and with EMS stakeholders, securing effective, transparent collaboration and aiming to continuously improve team’s effectiveness, impact and connectivity.
· Build capability: hire, train, coach, and develop talent; conduct performance appraisals; provide timely feedback and career guidance.
· Establish work-group goals aligned to business needs; translate strategy into clear plans, priorities, and measurable outcomes.
· Develop and manage programs, plans, and budgets to ensure delivery, customer satisfaction, and effective use of resources.
· Own the Materials Laboratory operations; ensure technical excellence, schedule adherence, and consistent methods across programs; provide technical materials support for additive manufacturing.
· Champion a proactive safety culture; establish guidance and procedures to manage laboratory risks and ensure a safe working environment.
· Establish, maintain, and enforce procedures that ensure safe, high-quality engineering and lab activities in conformance with Engineering Standards, Design Practices, and applicable Operating Procedures.
· Drive continuous improvement in processes across design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and productivity; identify, implement, and promote best practices.
· Ensure safety and compliance readiness for audits; represent the department and assure all compliance activities are met.
· Communicate technical, organizational, resource, and personnel matters effectively within the team, across organizations, and to senior leadership.
· Lead digitization initiatives to enhance engineering, laboratory, and business workflows.
· Provide effective and efficient services to assigned organizations, ensuring responsiveness and customer focus.
Qualifications/Requirements:
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical, Chemical, or related engineering field.
· Leadership: Proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams; management of budgets, headcount, and program approvals; responsible for organizational outcomes
· Program/Project Management: Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, control, and close complex programs/projects; manage multiple initiatives with diverse stakeholders and counterparts; deliver on-time completion
· Technical Expertise: Strong materials engineering knowledge, conventional manufacturing processes, and additive design/manufacturing principles; technical depth aligned to team scope
· Communication: Excellent written and oral communication in English and Spanish; ability to articulate strategy, set vision, and translate into executable plans
· Stakeholder & Conflict Management: Experience operating with high autonomy/ownership; adept at navigating high-conflict situations and labor issues
· Internal Candidates (LPB): Minimum 2 years managing LPB teams (for internal LPB applicants)
Desired:
· Experience with external funding pursuits, including IP protection processes
· LEAN / Flight Deck principles knowledge
· Materials application or R&D experience.
· Postgraduate degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical, Chemical, or related engineering field
· Proven ability to balance workload and resources
· For internal LPB candidates, experience managing SPB contributors
· Highly independent management of GE processes
· Contributions to tech maturation plans/projects
· Knowledgeable of AS9100 quality standard and its implementation on team processes
