Role Summary/Purpose
Metallurgists are responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in new alloy design & modelling, property optimization, microstructure quantification, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvement, and metallurgy-based service & repair work. Your primary responsibility in this job will be to provide creative technical approach and technical leadership in alloy design, research and innovation. Essential Responsibilities
As a Metallurgist, you will:
· Conduct basic and applied research as part of an interdisciplinary team in metallurgy including new alloy design, property optimization, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvement, and metallurgy-based service & repair work for intermetallics, Ti, Al, Ni based alloys.
· Lead research of interdisciplinary teams, now or in the future, on new alloy design, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvement, and metallurgy-based service & repair work.
· Work across organizations, including leading and interfacing with the characterization team on technical execution.
· Interface and communicate with GE businesses and external partners and universities on related research activities.
· Maintain, upgrade and train on multiple equipment necessary to conduct experiments.
· Reduce data to useful form using appropriate mathematical techniques and software tools.
· Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
· Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations, written reports, and as appropriate through external and internal publications to GE Research, GE businesses, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate.
· Invent and patent when appropriate.
· Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.
Qualifications/Requirements
· PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field.
· Demonstrated knowledge of metallurgy characterization methods (SEM, EDS, XRD, VSM, micro-CT, and/or IR).
· Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications and presentations at major conferences.
· Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
· Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics
· Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface with senior leadership and customers with confidence and clarity.
· Minimum two years experience in metallurgy, specifically in alloy design, alloy & defect characterization, and joining.
· Strong working knowledge of Office and Python.
· Demonstrated ability to deliver on innovative ideas for products and processes.
· Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment.
· Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems.
· Strong oral communication skills.
