Senior Java Developer — Cloud-Native Applications, DevOps and AI-first Development

CGI is seeking four Senior Java Developers to strengthen our consulting delivery teams in Montréal and Toronto. You will design, develop, modernize, integrate, and support enterprise grade applications for leading organizations across financial services, insurance, government, and telecommunications. Working within Agile teams, you will build cloud native, full stack solutions   from Spring Boot microservices and Kafka based event streaming to modern Angular or React front ends   deployed on Azure and AWS.

This role is deliberately polyvalent. You own the DevOps chain of your applications   CI/CD pipelines, containers and Kubernetes, observability, Infrastructure as Code   and you work AI first: development assistants such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code are part of your daily practice to design, code, test, document and review faster, within a rigorous framework of code review, testing and data governance.
This is a hands on senior engineering position with genuine consulting impact. Beyond writing code, you will help shape technical direction, contribute to modernization roadmaps, mentor developers, and engage directly with client stakeholders.

 

Your future duties and responsibilities:

.    Design, develop, test, and support enterprise grade applications built on Java, Spring, and Spring Boot.
.    Build microservices and REST APIs following API first practices, including contract design, versioning, and documentation.
.    Develop event driven integrations and streaming solutions using Kafka or comparable platforms.
.    Deliver full stack features, creating modern, responsive front ends in Angular or React with TypeScript.
.    Contribute to the modernization of legacy systems toward cloud native architectures on Azure or AWS.
.    Design efficient data access layers using JPA / Hibernate across SQL and NoSQL data stores.
.    Build and maintain the CI/CD pipelines (build, automated tests, security scanning, deployment) of your applications; containerize with Docker and deploy on Kubernetes.
.    Provision and evolve application infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, or CloudFormation) and GitOps practices, in collaboration with platform teams.
.    Instrument services for observability (logs, metrics, traces, alerting); participate in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and production support.
.    Use AI development assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or equivalent) for code and test generation, refactoring, documentation and review, in compliance with CGI and client security, confidentiality and intellectual property standards.
.    Contribute to the team's adoption of AI first engineering practices: prompt templates, guardrails, quality measures, sharing of good practices.
.    Embed secure coding, scalability, and resilience practices throughout the development lifecycle.
.    Collaborate daily with architects, product owners, business analysts, QA specialists, and platform engineers in Agile / Scrum teams.
.    Mentor intermediate and junior developers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
.    Communicate designs, estimates, trade offs, and progress clearly to technical and non technical stakeholders in a client facing environment.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

.    7+ years of hands on software development experience, with deep expertise in Java and enterprise application delivery (per reference job description).
.    Java & Spring   expert level Java with excellent command of Spring and Spring Boot for building enterprise services.
.    Proven track record designing, building, and supporting production systems based on microservices, REST APIs, and cloud platforms (Azure or AWS).
.    Data access & ORM   JPA / Hibernate or equivalent; SQL databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL), schema design and query optimization.
.    DevOps   building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins); Docker and Kubernetes; observability with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Splunk, Datadog, or Azure Monitor.
.    AI first development   productive, governed use of AI development assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or equivalent), with the ability to critically assess their output and validate it through testing and code review 
.    Demonstrated experience across the full development lifecycle in Agile / Scrum teams   from refinement and estimation through deployment and support.
.    Experience delivering within complex, multi team environments.

Assets
.    Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, or CloudFormation) and GitOps (Argo CD, Flux).
.    Event driven architecture   Apache Kafka or comparable platform; NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cosmos DB, DynamoDB).
.    Frontend engineering   Angular or React with TypeScript.
.    Integration of generative AI services into applications (Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, Spring AI; RAG and agent patterns); evaluation and responsible AI practices.
.    Advanced AI assisted engineering practices: agentic workflows, assisted code review, test generation, cost and usage risk management.
.    Azure or AWS certifications (e.g., Azure Developer Associate, AWS Certified Developer, or Solutions Architect); GitHub Copilot or equivalent certifications.
.    Experience in regulated industries such as banking and capital markets, insurance, government, healthcare, or telecommunications.
.    Previous consulting or professional services experience with direct client engagement.
.    Legacy modernization experience   monolith decomposition, re platforming, or cloud migration programs; API gateways, GraphQL, gRPC, Redis.
Soft skills and consulting profile
.    Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with sound, pragmatic technical judgment   including toward AI tool suggestions.
.    Collaborative approach   works effectively with architects, product owners, business analysts, QA teams, and platform engineers.
.    Clear communicator, able to translate complex technical topics for both technical and non technical stakeholders.
.    Comfortable and productive in Agile / Scrum delivery environments; enjoys mentoring and raising overall team capability.
.    Ownership mindset   accountable, dependable, and effective in a client facing consulting environment.

CGI is providing a reasonable estimate of the pay range for this role. The determination of this range includes factors such as skill set level, geographic market, experience and training, and licenses and certifications. Compensation decisions depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is 70,000-120,000 This role is an existing vacancy.

Bilingualism (French and English) is required for this position due to the nature of the role requiring interaction with national and global clients.
