In a nutshell

This role is to be an analyst within the Customer and Market Insight function to help us to understand our performance against the market in the categories we compete within. This role is primarily focussed on the competitive position of our business, and performance (both absolute and relative) of our competitors in our markets.

The team's objective is to manage the relationship with multiple Market Data providers, ensure we submit accurate and timely data to them and then analyse their output to provide insight into the wider business. The team will use multiple first and second-hand sources to compile insight on how we are performing, and vitally, how our major competitors are performing. They will be seeking new sources of data and market analysis to supplement the insight and will look to produce and automate reports that continually feed timely, actionable and highly relevant analysis into the wider teams.

What you need to do

This role will primarily be responsible for performing analysis on the outputs from the market and competitor data providers, often amalgamating multiple sources and individual data points together to provide a coherent storyline relevant to the question being asked. Working with the Data and reporting teams where appropriate, they will design and automate operational reports to minimise manual effort on repeatable tasks.

Specifically, this Analyst Role will:

They will be an exceptional analyst and able to analyse complex datasets, visualise them in appropriate ways and extract key pieces of insight. They will use multiple analytics techniques as necessary and will apply them to pieces of analysis as appropriate.
Collate and analyse competitor data from multiple sources, both quantitative (ie. Kantar media, Globaldata, etc) and qualitative (ie. News stories, trading statements etc) and combine to provide a holistic view of the competitive landscape, and our position within it
Working with key stakeholders around the business to develop and maintain a “watch list” of appropriate competitors. Use appropriate analytical process and available data to establish Sainsburys Argos “fair share” which can be used to size any opportunities arising.
Build and maintain a view of our performance against key competitors. This will be especially relevant during periods of heavy results reporting (post-Christmas etc), but will be an ongoing task
Develop and maintain regular reporting into key business review meetings (ie. Pulse, trading boards), as well as into seasonal reviews (PIR's)
Take on ad-hoc questions from business stakeholders on specific competitors, categories or products and gather all available market insight on them and present their findings in the appropriate way.
Working closely with business stakeholders, specially the finance and commercial teams across both the entire Sainsburys Argos business. They will naturally work very closely with the insight teams within CMI, providing the market and competitor context around specific questions.
Be the primary custodian of our competitor data, working with the business teams and third parties to ensure it is coherent and reporting is accurate. They will feed requirements into the Data management team for new reports to automate processes.
Have a good working knowledge of market share data and associated processes, enabling cover during periods of absence, holiday etc. as well as full cross team working
