Title: Patent Engineer III

Worksite: Seattle, WA

Position Responsibilities:

Manage Amazon’s patent portfolio, build and strengthen Amazon’s patent defensive position, drive due diligence on patent acquisitions and licensing, and engage with Amazon businesses on emerging technologies. Oversee the overall patent strategy defined by Amazon’s current and future product and technology roadmap. Provide engineering support to existing and planned IP programs, litigations, projects, and initiatives. Provide engineering advice on the design and operation of server fleets, cloud storage, distributed networks, managed databases, message queues, content delivery networks, analytics and data pipelines, video processing, mobile services, and network and computer security measures. Collaborate with Amazon attorneys in defense against third party assertions by conducting invalidity searches and preparing non-infringement arguments. Create and apply advanced methodologies for patent characterization based on machine learning, proprietary taxonomy, classifications, family status, and semantic analysis.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Position Requirements:

Master's degree or foreign equivalent Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and three years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation as equivalent to a Master’s degree and three years of experience. Must have one year of experience in the following skill(s): legal claim construction and current patent case law; advanced patent mining and analysis; application of practical understanding of patent valuation: experience with licensing, encumbrances, exhaustion, standards obligations, royalties, infringement, and prior-art; and experience with third party tools for patent portfolio analysis and searches.
