Description of the job

A vacancy for a Mechanical Architect has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Stevenage.

The engineer presents the satellite architecture to customers with the use of presentations and formal design review packs and meetings. Similarly the architect has to agree/ accept test results from the various phases of build (subsystem/spacecraft) and where necessary defend these at customer delivery reviews.

Within Airbus we use separate departments/ specialists in the power, communications, instrument and payload design, product assurance/quality assurance, electronics, stress and fracture analysis fields, but the mechanical architect requires an awareness of these disciplines.

The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

·  Management of the Satellite Accommodation & Structure verification, Mechanical sub-systems (including structure, mechanism, booms) both in house and sub - contract.
·  Team management of thermal and propulsion architects plus dynamic analysis and drawing office personnel.
·  The architect will have to give guidance to CAD operators in order to generate drawings and documents for satellite integration. The architect will also have to interface with Integration & Verification to resolve problems as necessary.
·  Preparation / evaluation of test plans and test reports. Maintenance of a data base of equipment mechanical qualification status.
·  Management of the mechanical analysis team during satellite level environmental testing, including liaison to customer, launch service provider, test facilities and project management.
·  Schedule and cost control using company software. Management of in house and sub-contract costs.

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

·  Degree subjects Maths/ Physics/ Mech. or Aero. Engineering or relevant experience in lieu.
·  Proven capability and experience within a mechanical test environment.
·  Strong knowledge of lightweight aerospace structures, tools and materials to deliver structural concept, design verification and test of structural design to show it is fit for purpose.
·  PC skills, word, excel, access, other software of benefit (e.g. FEM, Nastran).
·  Strong experience in customer (internal & external) management with strong and persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
·  Previous leadership of a complex multi discipline team would be highly advantageous.
