Job description
Loads and Aeroelastics Engineer (f/m)
Airbus Filton
Airbus is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2017, it generated revenues of € 67 billion and employed a workforce of around 130,000. Airbus offers the most comprehensive range of passenger airliners from 100 to more than 600 seats. Airbus is also a European leader providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft, as well as Europe's number one space enterprise and the world's second largest space business. In helicopters, Airbus provides the most efficient civil and military rotorcraft solutions worldwide.
Our people work with passion and determination to make the world a more connected, safer and smarter place. Taking pride in our work, we draw on each other's expertise and experience to achieve excellence. Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.
Description of the job
An exciting opportunity for a Loads and Aeroelastics Engineer has arisen in Airbus Filton. The team is responsible for:
o Calculating the flight loads (manoeuvre loads, gust loads, and failure caseloads) used for sizing all major structural components (wing, fuselage, engine, pylon, VTP, HTP) for all Airbus aircraft and projects.
o Static aeroelastic wing deformation analysis in support of flight shape optimisation.
This is a whole aircraft discipline and the role therefore provides an excellent opportunity to build a broad knowledge of the integrated aircraft.
Desired profile
Tasks & accountabilities
The holder of this position contributes to the optimisation of Airbus aircraft in all design phases in terms of flight loads and static aeroelastic analysis. The main activities are:
o Perform analysis of static and dynamic aircraft behaviour in flight with a focus on the interaction of mass properties, aerodynamics, structure and system.
o Compute all external loads acting on the aircraft due to flight manoeuvres, also considering relevant flight control system failures, in accordance with Loads and Aeroelastics internal customer requirements. This is from early design through to flight test and certification.
o Establish target design load level recommendations for major structural components
o Monitor and maintain robust loads levels via innovative multidisciplinary approaches (e.g. tuning of flight control laws, derivation of loads sensitivities to supplier input changes, etc).
o Perform static aeroelastic analysis using CFD-CSM and support the aerodynamics office with flight shape optimisation
o Contribute to strategic R&T projects in the field of aircraft loads and aeroelastics.
o Lead tasks to ensure completion and achievement of deliverables to Time, Cost and Quality objectives.
o Participate in transnational teams on key projects.
o Propose modelling, process and method improvements through M&T projects
o Support in-service aircraft through operational incident analysis
Required skills
As the successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
o Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar. A PhD in related subject matter is desirable.
o Knowledge and experience of methodologies, tools and processes used to perform flight loads, structural dynamics and aeroelastic analyses.
o Knowledge of Finite Element Modelling and associated tools e.g. NASTRAN.
o Knowledge of engineering analysis tools such as MATLAB and scripting in Unix/Linux is an advantage.
o Awareness of relevant Airworthiness requirements (EASA, FAA) and associated procedures.
o Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to interact effectively within local and transnational teams, and with customers and suppliers.
o Intellectual curiosity and an aptitude for problem-solving and innovation.
o Enthusiastic, energetic and pro-active approach to team working and a willingness to exercise technical leadership as required.
Please ensure that a covering letter detailing motivations and suitability for this position is included in your application.
