Due to organic growth and new projects Airbus are looking for a Cleanliness & Contamination Engineer to be based on the Stevenage site. As a Cleanliness & Contamination Engineer you will be joining a small team in the UK who are part of a larger transnational team (20). You will be working with your peers who are passionate about knowledge sharing.
Satellites & Spacecraft are highly sensitive to particulate and molecular contamination as they can highly affect their performance in flight. Especially, Earth Observation Satellites and optical instruments are critical and cleanliness levels shall be strictly controlled to prevent any issue on ground during manufacturing and tests, or in flight (materials outgassing / condensation, thruster plume effects).
The Cleanliness & Contamination Control (C&CC) technical domain is part of 'Materials & Processes' department. As a C&CC engineer, you will be in charge to guarantee spacecraft cleanliness levels along its lifetime on ground, during launch and in flight, and therefore guarantee associated performance.
The C&CC engineer is involved all along the program:
• from the design (material selection, influence spacecraft architecture, bake out strategy definition & implementation),
• follow procurement of Equipment (specification to suppliers and documentation review)
• during manufacturing & tests (Cleanroom & test facilities contamination predictions & monitoring),
• in orbit contamination predictions and follow on in case of unexpected behaviour
• Keep in constant communication with the suppliers, customers and other departments to inform of timeframes and manage expectations
• Visit the lab environment to gain an understanding of the lab and the engineers who work there.
The role comes with frequent travel, due to meeting suppliers and customers.
Tasks & accountabilities
For each program, the C&CC engineer mission is to deliver:
• Cleanliness Requirement Specification - Definition of requirements needed to ensure cleanliness during on ground and in flight operations
• Cleanliness & Contamination Control Plan - Define and implement manufacturing conditions needed to guarantee cleanliness levels (Cleanroom environment definition, material selection, covers, purging concept validation, qualification of cleaning methods),
• Define & implement production monitoring methods with support of the laboratory.
• Manage on ground and in orbit contamination predictions (with support of Space Physics department for simulations)
• Bake out plans & reports (define & implement bake out conditions, associated success criteria)
• Program / Equipment cleanliness reports & certificate at delivery or at launch

Required skills
• Experienced in Space industry, with a good leadership, interfacing with customers / agencies
• Experienced in Cleanroom management, Cleanliness during thermal vacuum tests & bake out
• Some knowledge in Quartz Cristal Microbalance / gas analysis / mass spectrometer.
Any understanding of Cleanliness of fluidic systems would be appreciated, but not essential.
