The Business

Reinsurance is one of largest Global Financial Services Business. It is totally global, very large with annual premiums in excess $250 billion and increasingly acts as the ultimate risk bearer for an expanding range of societal risks. Traditionally reinsurance support insurance companies to manage the risks they accept from individuals and companies. This has led to the reinsurance industry developing advanced analytical skills to measure, manage and mitigate the risks their insurance company clients are accepting. These advanced analytical and risk transfer skills which are increasingly developed through partnerships with academia have been brought to the attention of para statal bodies such as the UN and the World Bank as well as a range of NGO’s and Government Aid Bodies who have been looking for a way to connect the world of private capital to wider societal risks. These risks include climate change driven risks such as flood, typhoon, drought, pandemic as well as technological risks such as cyber and political risks such as terrorism.

Not only has the reinsurance industry found ways to measure and mitigate these risks at the same time global financial markets have developed the concept of insurance risk as an investable class of asset in its own right. This development has opened up a huge new financial capacity to accept and absorb risk with the capacity provided the traditional reinsurance industry now being augmented with new capital from global financial markets. At this cross road of innovation sits the reinsurance broker who acts as the fulcrum coordinating and developing all these activities.
