Powertrain Engineering contributes to the Volvo Group’s competitive position in the marketplace by developing and maintaining profitable products and product components in terms of quality, delivery, cost, and function, while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. Our scope of work includes the engineering and design of engines, gearboxes, axles, hybrid technology, and driveline, based on common architecture and shared technology. 

 

In Curitiba, we play a significant role in the Latin American market concerning Powertrain Engineering Applications. We have ownership of heavy diesel engines in all markets worldwide up to Euro 5 legislation. For Euro 6 development, we not only provide support but also engage in specific global responsibilities. Furthermore, we collaborate with the global organization on various delegated responsibilities as needed, including those related to US emissions standards (EPA/CARB), Euro 7, and concept development. 

 

In the EATS & Combustion Diagnostics team, we develop the OBD Software and calibration of combustion engines and exhaust after-treatment systems. Our team consists of skilled engineers with diverse backgrounds who work together to find innovative solutions for On-Board Diagnostics, through both deskwork and hands-on activities at engine test cells and vehicles, supporting software and hardware development. 

 

We are seeking a motivated individual to join us as an Embedded Software Application Engineer focused in On-board diagnostics. Do you want to be a part of it? 
 

What you will do

As an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) embedded software engineer, you will work in the engineering department focused on heavy and medium-duty engines and their exhaust after-treatment systems. Your goal will be to assist the team in the design, development, and implementation of embedded software solutions that support diagnostic systems, enabling the monitoring and reporting of the performance of various components in compliance with legislative requirements. The diagnostics team collaborates with various areas of the Volvo Group, including vehicle testing, engine dynamometer operations, and calibration engineering, supported by a comprehensive infrastructure at the Curitiba plant. Our product scope includes trucks and buses, and we work closely with colleagues and customers in different countries, either providing support or taking on global responsibility.

 

Your core responsibilities will be

·  Develop software strategies, functions, and features specifically aimed at enhancing On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems, focusing on aspects such as diagnostic accuracy, compliance with emission regulations, and integration with exhaust after-treatment systems. This involves managing various phases of the product life cycle, from Advanced Engineering to Product Projects and Product Maintenance.
·  Actively engage in quality assurance by performing critical analysis of OBD software, evaluating the complete diagnostic system, and proposing, testing, and following up on solutions to enhance software reliability and performance.
·  Interface with a variety of stakeholders—including project team members, software development teams, and other engineering disciplines—within our multi-site organization, fostering strong networks that promote proactive and constructive collaboration on OBD-related projects.
·  Contribute as an active community member within the OBD software engineering domain, participating in process improvement teams and sharing best practices to enhance overall team performance.
 

Required Experience and Technical Skills

·  Solid knowledge of specific tools Matlab/Simulink and C programming languages;  
·  Other computer science / programming language skills (e.g. Matlab scripts, Python, code version control, data analysis, machine learning, etc.)

 

Preferred Qualifications

·  Understanding of powertrain operation and/or engine after-treatment systems.
·  Previous knowledge in On-board diagnostics.
·  Familiarity with data analysis and optimization tools such as Python, MATLAB, Uniplot, VBA, etc.
·  Knowledge of Euro IV, V, VI legislations and the engine certification process. 

 

Education

·  Master of Science (equivalent to engineering degree in Brazil) in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or Control and Automation Engineering.
·  Higher graduation level is a merit.
·  Fluent in English and Portuguese, both written and spoken.
