Background of thesis project

Title - Software design patterns for service-oriented architecture in heavy vehicles

Motion and power management systems are key components responsible for driving dynamics in heavy vehicles. They ensure safe and efficient control of actuator systems to follow an intended path along the road. Software algorithms used in these systems are designed, optimized and well suited for hard real time constrained platforms such as Classic Autosar. Today these software systems are designed in Simulink and integrated on to the platform. However, as the complexity of these systems are growing and need for service oriented architecture (SOA) supporting features such as dynamic configuration, re-allocation and deployment of the software is increasing, there is a shift to platforms more similar to desktop and mobile systems. Adaptive Autosar is an example of such a platform that is being adopted within the automotive industry.

Suitable background of students

Candidates should be in the final year of their Master's studies. Suitable programmes include Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, Mechatronics. Candidates with equivalent background from other programmes will also be considered.
Skills in the following area is recommended – Programming in C/C++, Knowledge of embedded systems architecture, Linux and Simulink. As the work environment is highly international, good skills in English, both oral and written, are required.

Description of thesis work
Thesis Level: Master

The objective of the thesis is to investigate the suitability to move to a POSIX based software platform for a system that is responsible for motion and power management. The main motivation for such a move is to take advantage of the flexibility of the platform while not compromising on the overall determinism and safety of the system. Suitable subsystems are to be ported to the Adaptive Autosar and/or Linux platform. How a split into both Classic Autosar and Adaptive Autosar impacts the complete system, including the development environment should be evaluated. Particular focus when evaluating should be on the software design patterns of how a service oriented architecture can be realized on the platform.
Firstly, a literature survey about the state of the art usage of SOA should be conducted. Suitable architecture for motion and power management systems shall be identified. Then the current system shall be decomposed and redesigned on to the adaptive platform based on the proposed SOA. Once implemented onto the platform, the system should be verified and its performance in terms of execution time and communication latency with the Classic Autosar platform should be analyzed and presented.
