As a Java Chapter Lead, you should enjoy building and motivating high-performing teams and actively participate in strategy and execution. You should act as a role model for leaders and individual engineers as we develop Java domain and community.

You need to have several years of experience as a practitioner (Software Engineer) and be a technical expert in the Java domain. Demonstrated leadership qualities to coach people or a few years´ experience of leading people, preferably in the Java Domain is also crucial. Working with agile methodologies comes naturally to you.

Job Requirements

You must have:

·  At least 2 years of people management experience, including
·  Excellent communication skills and resilience
·  Coaching or mentoring
·  Developing direct reports and others
·  Problem solving
·  Minimum 10 years of total IT experience, that ensured:
·  Minimum 5 years of recent hands-on experience in developing microservices using Java (Spring Boot) and building RESTful APIs
·  Solid understanding of distributed systems architecture and Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles
·  Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions
·  Strong knowledge of software engineering best practices such as Clean Code, SOLID principles, and Test-Driven Development (TDD)
·  Ability to develop secure, testable, and high-performance code
·  Experience with monitoring, logging, and profiling tools for Java applications (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Azure Monitor, Slack)
·  Familiarity with design patterns and best practices for building scalable and highly available systems
·  Experience with Kubernetes and deploying Java applications to cloud platforms (preferably Azure AKS, AWS EKS, or GCP GKE)
·  Practical knowledge of Azure services (e.g., Key Vault, Application Gateway, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure DevOps)
·  Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools and version control systems (Git, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines)
·  Understanding of application security protocols (e.g., OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, OWASP)
·  In-depth understanding of the full software development lifecycle (design, development, deployment, and maintenance)
·  Focus on continuous code and process improvement to optimize team performance and software quality

What you will do

As Java Chapter Lead you are a technically skilled domain expert with the additional responsibility as line manager.

 

Here you will lead a team of software engineers who learn continuously and embrace change to stay ahead.

 

You will contribute to common ways of working across the Software Engineering Chapter through methods and best practices according to standards, technologies, and trends. Your core responsibilities will involve both technical leadership – contributing to and guiding the team's technical work – and the management and development of a team of Java engineers at your location.
 

You will: 

·  Be a Technical expert (Java or Java Fullstack)
·  As Technical Lead in delivery or product teams in Java, responsible for hands-on coding, conducting thorough code reviews, and driving initiatives to ensure high software quality and technical standards
·  Work with stakeholders across the Volvo Group to be in line with changing business needs
·  Work with designers and software engineers to develop modern & intuitive applications
·  Drive planning, developing and implementing user interface and product solutions 
·  Secure agile ways of working
·  Be a People manager, managing a team of software engineers
·  Lead, develop and attract a team of talented Java engineers, supporting their personal growth and challenges on assignments
·  Manage capacity planning, ensuring short and long-term competence and capacity of the Java software engineers
·  Develop and execute the competence strategy for Java engineers within your team, meeting with chapter members to discuss and drive excellence in areas such as best practices, frameworks and tools 
·  Secure external input and best practice sharing in the community
·  Mentor/ coach other developers and line members
·  Balance your time between line manager and delivery team member

 

Your future team

·  You will be part of the Software Engineering Leadership Team and report to one of the Chapter Area Leads.
·  You will join Agile delivery team, where through collaboration with other Software Engineers you will contribute to product increments
