Job description

Rail Cantech is looking for a Construction Supervisor for its Project Management Team that is building the Ottawa LRT Confederation Line Extension in Ottawa.  
The project is located in Ottawa, and is split over two extensions of the existing Confederation Line with the East Connector adding 12.5km of double track from the existing Blair station into the suburbs of Orleans, and the West Connector adding 15km of double track.

Reporting to the General Supervisor, the Construction Supervisor is responsible for overseeing construction activities and coordinating with various stakeholders to achieve project milestones. Your role will involve ensuring project success through effective resource management, quality control, and safety enforcement. This position requires a understanding of basic construction principles and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic field environment.  

More specifically, you will have to : 

  • Promote the company’s safety and workplace culture and adhere to the federal, provincial and company policies and procedures; 
  • Ensure that all company employees, our clients and the general public enjoy a safe working environment on our construction sites; 
  • Planning, organizing and directing of the day-to-day field activities according to schedule, specifications and budget; 
  • Inspect and approve maintenance, repair and construction work for compliance with regulations and technical standards; 
  • Establish methods to meet construction schedules and milestones against established schedules and coordinating work activities with other departments/supervisors/subcontractors/managers; 
  • Monitor and manage work crew performance related to project specific Key Performance Indicators (KPI); 
  • Resolving work problems and recommending measures to improve safety, productivity and product quality; 
  • Supervising the activities of subordinated staff and subcontractors; 
  • Perform administrative task such as preparation of production reports, review and approval of time sheets, review of equipment logs and inspection reports; 
  • Respond to emergency situations. 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • Secondary School Diploma (or equivalency). 
  • Pass pre-employment medical test and background check (e-railsafe). 
    Valid drivers license G (for Ontario) and 5 (for Quebec) and good driving record. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand or Railway Track Welder 
  • Supervisory experience for multiple crews of workers is an asset. 
  • Experience in managing unionized workforce is an asset. 
  • Safety-oriented attitude with clear understanding of safety rules, policies, procedures, regulations, and the application in the field. 
  • Thoroughly understanding of all aspects of railway track construction and maintenance, including the ability to read and understand blueprints and technical specifications.  
  • Provide guidance and leadership for crews on site and support new employees with coaching and training. 
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills. 
  • Computer skills shall include basic knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Some travel away from home is required, some weekends and night work. 
  • Ability to speak/read/write in French language is an asset.
