Job Description
The Thermal Operator safety and efficiently operates their assigned Work Unit at the Swan Hills Treatment Centre (SHTC) to achieve operational targets. Maintains Unit in clean and effective working order at all times. The incumbent trains and assists other members of their crew as required. To successfully operate an area, recording and interpreting unit readings, writing daily logs, troubleshooting as necessary and general housekeeping is performed, is an active member of our Emergency Response Team (ERT) and performs ERT duties during an emergency situation. Availability for on-call duties is required. Incumbent is required to work 10-hour day shifts. This position operates within a COR and ISO 17025 certified, and ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 conforming plant environment. The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.
Key Responsibilities:
The duties of the Thermal Operator are as follows, but not limited to:
· Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals
· Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace; Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements
· Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff; Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment
· Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a service of the highest standard achievable
· Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures
· Safely operates company owned, leased, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment; Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities; Operates heavy equipment as per shift requirements
· Enhances skills to become proficient in the daily operations of an assigned operating area. Rotates through various operating areas as prescribed by the Shift Supervisor
· Completes daily routines and assigned tasks. Writes daily logs
· Takes and interprets unit readings as required
· Maintains housekeeping standards in all operating areas
· Assists in the administration of the plant Safe Work Permit System
· Assists Shift Supervisor in the start-up, shut down and monitoring of equipment
· Updates both Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor of unit status
· Assists senior operators as directed. Completes additional work assignments as required
· Performs Emergency Response Team (ERT) duties during an emergency; Required to be an active ERT member, attend and actively participate in monthly meetings and training; Provides mentoring and guidance to newer team members
· Assists and verifies that operating areas are secure during emergency conditions
· Actively participates in plant training/progression program to enhance skills and proficiency
· Performs On- Call duties as assigned
· Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement
· Understands and is accountable for responsibilities as Thermal Operator as described in Sections 2-2 and 3-2 of the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Swan Hills Treatment Centre Safety manual, EH&S Management System documentation and other relevant policies
· Conducts a Safe Work Plan (SWP) review prior to any non-routine and critical activities. Documents and maintains a record of the meeting. Verifies that all involved in a SWP understand the risks and sign the document prior to starting the job. Reviews safety and environmental practices for contractors assigned to him/her. Conducts a pre-job safety meeting with the contractor’s supervisor and his/her staff to review policies applicable to the job
· Completes other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
· Minimum of High School Diploma
· Minimum of 1 years related industrial process-plant experience
· Preference for 3 to 5 years’ related experience
· Knowledge of hazardous waste treatment industry is a definite asset
· Must obtain 100% on Facility Environmental Operating License Exam
· Effective customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results
· Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people, including peers and manager, employees, and other departments, divisions, and management within all levels of the organization
· Effective negotiation, persuasion, and listening skills to facilitate successful resolution of employee and management concerns and requests
· Effective verbal and written communication skills to facilitate and promote open discussions and understanding
· Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills
· Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fastpaced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions
· Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
· Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills
· Intermediate level computer skills to operate MS Office Suite (especially Outlook, Excel, and Word)
· Good mechanical aptitude and skills
· Effective troubleshooting skills
· Ability to work 10-hour day shifts, with ability to cover off shifts if coverage is required and competence is met
· Ability to perform ERT duties
· Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures
· Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, negative alcohol and drug test, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, preemployment medical, and background check
· An Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate or commitment to actively pursue the same is required
Working Environment:
· Incumbent performs Safety Sensitive duties or responsibilities
· Position has been classified as a Security Sensitive position in accordance with company policy
· Continually managing priorities to meet operational objectives
· Achieving expected performance standards while maintaining an efficient and safe working environment
· High volume workload requiring both sound technical knowledge and ability to provide exceptional customer service
· May be required to wear breathing apparatus and work long hours during emergency conditions
· Required to work 10-hour day shifts
· Regularly required to do Heavy Lifting
· Works directly in the plant; required to climb ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, and chemicals and hazardous waste
· Exposed to PCBs, Compressed/flammable gas, mobile equipment, moving equipment, rotating equipment and electrical hazards
· Exposed to Hot and Cold working environments
· Required to wear respirator and/or breathing apparatus while in designated areas of the plant and/or laboratory.
· Despite the relatively low risk of exposure to potential waste contaminants, participation in the SHTC employee health monitoring program is required
· Also may be exposed to Thermal (fire), Bio-medical (medical response), Overhead Hazards, Mechanical hazards, Compressed Gases, Heat/Cold Stresses, Ergonomic/MSI problems and Physical Exertion (firefighting,training)
