Job Description

Established in 2016, the Scientific Computing, Data Science and AI Transverse Research Program is one of 25 R&D programs of the Total Group R&D Portfolio. The R&D Program is at the leading edge of strategically important research activities that may impact all current and future activities of the Total Group. Our activities are accelerated through proprietary research, joint-industry projects, government and university-sponsored programs, and by leveraging alliances with corporate partners and other research centers and academic institutions.

Delivering the R&D Program’s strategic objectives and roadmap is achieved by conducting research in the following key focus areas, where the contributions of Scientific Computing, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are crucial and strategic:

The incumbent will be part of the staff of the Computational Science, Engineering and Data Science team of the Total EP Research & Development USA affiliate. A matrix organization supports the execution of the R&D programs with the R&D Program Manager located in Paris and delegation of activities to Project Leaders operating in close coordination with Centers of Excellence around the world, including in Paris (Total Corporate R&D), Houston and the San Francisco Bay area (both managed by TEP RT USA).

The incumbent will play a major role in the Data Science and AI activity.  She/He will lead, steer, coordinate and relay R&D actions under the supervision of the Project Leader. She/He will also propose additional actions and participate in scouting research institutes and companies that could bring value to the company.

The key relationships in Total, in addition to the direct management, are:
·  The Computational Science, Engineering and Data Science R&D Program (headed out of Paris)
·  The CSE & Data Science team in Saclay
·  The CSE & Data Science department team in TEPRT
·  All Total businesses that are dealing with Energy Management Systems
·  External partners, in particular, Stanford, UC Berkeley As part of their activities, the incumbent will:
·  Conduct cutting-edge research in Data Science for “Energy Management Systems and Carbon Management”, serving our multi-disciplinary and transverse operations in all Total branches, under the supervision of the “Industrial AI” Project Leader.
·  Coordinate and participate in existing or future R&D collaborations with academics or industrial companies.
·  Propose and undertake new research ideas and activities in “Energy Management Systems and Carbon Management” projects. Develop research ideas related to Data Science for “Energy Management Systems and Carbon Management”.
·  Propose internship projects, participate in intern selection and mentor interns with assigned projects.
·  Actively contribute to code development and management.
·  Participate in the research projects, by contributing to algorithm and code development using standard software development procedures.
·  Attend conferences with a focus on “Energy Management Systems and Carbon Management” and produce conference memos.
·  Publish reports and peer-reviewed publications summarizing research findings. Present results at program meetings and scientific conferences.
·  Promote the Company’s reputation in the professional and academic community.
·  Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidate profile

·  PhD in Energy Resources Engineering or Applied Math or Optimization or Operations Research or Machine Learning
·  Three-years’ experience, including PhD experience
·  Excellent knowledge of modern machine learning and optimization techniques
·  Excellent knowledge of at least one of the following programming languages Python, C++, R, Matlab and good knowledge of the other ones
·  Fluent English;
·  Excellent communication skills
·  Some level of fluency in French (read, understand) is considered a plus.
·  Must be willing to relocate as part of a long-term career development in Total.
·  Must be able to legally work in the US.
