INTERNSHIP - Perovskite solar cell and module reliability testing
Internship FRANCE Sales

Description du poste
Job Environment and Context
Perovskite absorbers for solar cells are combining excellent opto-electronic properties, with potential for low-cost fabrication and a technology that is a viable pathway for producing tandem junction solar cells on silicon bottom cells. The major challenge for this technology is the long-term stability of solar cells based on perovskite. IPVF developings own perovskite solar cells and cooperates with international partners for joint tandem junction development. The internship targets to test and characterize the long-term stability by means of accelerated degradation tests in the laboratory, performance characterization and comparison to outdoor experiments.
The internship work will happen in the laboratories of IPVF and performed in collaboration with the researchers of IPVF and Total. The work is associated with workpackage WP5 (reliability and performance) of program IV (Characterization, Reliability and Modelling).
For understanding the root-causes of observed degradations we collaborate with the specialists for photo- and electrical luminescence, chemical characterization and interface science in WPs1-4.
Results of the internship are used directly for modelling the expected energy production in collaboration with the team of WP6, which informs the techno-economic analysis of perovskite technologies (IPVF's Program I).
Objectives, Missions and Tasks
The internship will measure the degradation rates and characterize the performance changes of perovskite-based solar cells and modules under stresses that represent real-world operation. UV-light exposure, temperature changes, humidity and reverse bias due to partial shading are amongst these stressors to be tested. An important basis of this work is characterization of cells and modules by means of IV-curve analysis and maximum power point tracking. For understanding the root-causes of observed degradations we collaborate with the specialists for photo- and electrical luminescence, chemical characterization and interface science in WPs1-4.
The general procedure is the accurate measurement of the efficiency and performance of new devices, and to re-characterize them after or during the applicaiton of stresses in accelerated aging test.
Also within the scope of the internship is to adapt standard PV reliability tests for specific requirements of perovskite solar cells and modules.
The key activities for characterization are:
- IV curve tracing
- Parametization of the results to separate recombination losses from electrical transport mechanisms
- Quantum-Efficiency measurements to determine the spectral response
- Maximum power point tracking to accurately determine the electrical energy production in steady state
The degradation tests include:
- UV exposure
- Humidity and temperature exposure in climate chambers
- Reverse bias testing to observe susceptibility to damages by partial shading in PV installations
- Exposure to high-voltage to test for potential-induced degradation
Knowledge and Skills Developed during the mission
Solar cell and module characterization, device physics and basic modelling, failure analysis of PV modules
