The Acid Gas Entity of the LNG product line contributes to various tasks related to gas sweetening: process development and operational assistance, research, and consolidation of knowledge 

Objectifs, Missions et Activités

Natural gas is relatively cheap, abundant, and, it is the fossil energy carrier which, when burned, emits the lowest amount of CO2 per unit of energy output. Therefore, its importance in the energy mix is expected to strongly increase in the coming decades. A significant part of the world’s natural gas reserves is acid, as they contain H2S and CO2, and their removal is necessary before entering the gas pipelines and the liquefaction units (for LNG). The most common industrial method to sweeten the gas (i.e., to remove these acidic components) is absorption into a liquid solvent, particularly aqueous alkanolamine solutions.  

The development of new solvents to capture acid gas has been an ongoing research topic since decades. New solvents are required for task-specific absorption and/or to lower the high energy consumption of the absorption regeneration unit. The topic has recently received renewed attention because of the rising importance of CO2 capture to mitigate climate change. 

Key properties in the development of new solvents are currently being measured experimentally. They include Vapor Liquid Equilibrium curves (VLEs), the kinetic and mass transfer coefficients, and physico-chemical properties like the viscosity, etc. The aim of the internship is to use those experimental data points to develop a thermodynamic, kinetic and mass transfer model which will be inserted in a process simulation tool of an acid gas removal unit (e.g. AspenPlus). This tool will subsequently be used to evaluate the performance of the new solvent under industrial conditions. The results of the simulation will be compared to CO2 absorption-regeneration pilot test results. 

This internship requires an interest in gas treatment and CO2 capture, in the development of thermodynamic and kinetic models and in the use of process simulation tools. The intern should be able to write and read technical English.

The intern will developp knowledge and understanding of natural gas treatment processes ;of complex thermodynamic/kinetic modelling in general and more specifically of an acid gas absorption unit; and of the use of process simulation tools (e.g. Aspen) to evaluate different solvents for an acid gas absorption unit.
