Job Description

Established in 2016, the Scientific Computing, Data Science and AI Transverse Research Program is at the leading edge of strategically important research areas that may impact all activities of Total Group. Our activities are accelerated through proprietary research, joint-industry projects, government and university-sponsored programs, and by leveraging alliances with corporate partners and other research centers.

Our strategic goals are fueled by research in the following exciting areas, where Data Science and Artificial Intelligence will be crucial and strategic:

·  Earth Imaging, remote sensing, teledetection,
·  Image analysis,
·  Industrial operations optimization (incl. predictive maintenance, early fault detection, etc…),
·  NLP (Natural Language Processing) and Information Extraction,
·  Energy management systems, smart grids, smart cities,
·  B2C and B2B, contextual information
·  Renewables energies
·  Forecasting
·  Inverse problems
·  New materials discovery, process modelling  
The position will be part of our Computational Science, Engineering and Data Science entity operating research in Saclay.

The incumbent will play a major role in the creation of the Total Saclay research entity for the Data Science and AI activity, leading, steering, coordinating and relaying R&D actions. He/She will also propose additional actions and participate inscouting research institutes and companies in Paris Saclay area that could bring value to the company.

The key stakeholders within Total, in addition to the direct management, are:

·  The Computational Science, Engineering and Data Science R&D program
·  The CSE & Data Science department team in Saclay
·  The CSE & Data Science department team in TEPRT
·  Possibly all Total businesses
·  Plus External partners, in particular, the universities of Rice and Stanford and Imperial College As part of its activity, the incumbent will:

·  Conduct cutting-edge research to design and develop machine-learning and deep learning algorithms for, serving our multi-disciplinary and transverse operations in all Total branches, with emphasis on reinforcement learning
·  Coordinate and participate to existing or future R&D collaborations with academics
·  Coordinate and participate in existing or future collaborations with companies
·  Propose and undertake Data Science Research projects. Develop research idea related to Data Science topics.
·  Propose internship projects, participate in intern selection and mentor intern with assigned project.
·  Actively contribute to code development and management.
·  Participate in the research programs, by developing and testing algorithms, modelling, and software (Python, R…)
·  Follow the standard software development procedures.  Write clean code with clear documentation.
·  Conduct test and performance tuning on developed software.
·  Attend conferences with Data Science focus and produce conference memos.
·  Publish reports and peer-review publications summarizing research findings. Present results at program meetings and scientific conferences.
·  Promote the Company’s vision and activities  in the professional and academic community

Candidate profile

·  PhD in a computational field (Computer science, engineering, physics…)
·  Strong background in reinforcement learning techniques
·  Very good knowledge of the main modern data science and machine learning techniques (Statistical learning, machine learning, deep learning, trees, random forest, clustering…)
·  Mastery of data science main programming languages such as Python, R, Matlab
·  Familiar with agile methods for software development (Scrum, Kanban, XP…)
·  Fluent English, French is appreciated
