Senior Staff Engineer – Database Administration (Selling & Store Operations)
What you’ll do
The Global Infrastructure and Operations Selling & Store Operations Team is responsible for managing Front and Back of Stores support within TJX IT. We deliver support services to the stores that enrich the Customer and Associate experience and provide business value. We seek a motivated Senior Application Database Engineer to manage and maintain databases within the organization, ensuring their performance, security, and availability.
You will lead the technology support associated with the Front and Back Office (operations, productivity, product flow, etc) solutions, working with the Product delivery team for a cross functional set of Global users. Using your Engineering mindset, you will help influence delivery solutions to our rapidly growing North American and European partners. Core responsibilities will include influencing the technology modernization, establish engineering best practices, drive technology roadmap support design and determine solutions.
What you’ll need
We are seeking a seasoned Application Development and Administration Expert with extensive experience in Oracle-based solutions, particularly within large-scale retail environments to support Stores globally. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge, leadership experience, and a proven track record of success in managing, upgrading, and optimizing enterprise-level Oracle systems.
Our ideal candidate will have solution architecture and core engineering experience in the field of database administration. One who is familiar with the challenges of supporting and influencing design, development, and deployment of software and hardware.
In this role you will do the following.
- Act in a Lead Engineer capacity in modernizing front and back of stores systems by prioritizing, providing guidance and resolving issues.
- Work closely with Enterprise Architecture, Security, Infrastructure, Product and Stores Engineering teams to influence design, code, deployment and support of working software components.
- Contribute to the overall roadmap, new technology etc. and responsible for the evaluation, demo of the new technology and the solution.
- Adhere to the corporate security compliance, performance rules and regulations, etc.
- Review design documents with Enterprise Architect and Engineering leads to make sure it’s supportable.
- Perform analysis, point out solution deficiency and recommend corrective actions with supportability in mind.
- Strong problem-solving abilities when working on complex technical problems.
- Develop constructive and collaborative working relationships with peers inside and outside of the IT organization and maintain them over time.
- Develop and implement standards and tools for monitoring and analysis to increase organization effectiveness.
- Drive continuous improvements in process and operational efficiency by reducing operational burden.
- Perform Troubleshooting and Problem Solving, responding to major incidents impacting stores / services
Required Qualifications
- Expertise in Oracle Technologies:
- In-depth knowledge of Oracle Databases, Oracle Applications, Oracle Middleware, and Oracle Retail solutions.
- Strong proficiency in Oracle Xstore (POS and Xoffice), Retail Merchandising Operations Management (MOM), and Oracle Financials.
- Retail System Implementation & Support:
- Demonstrated success in migrating legacy POS systems to Oracle Xstore across 4,000+ stores.
- Experience managing the full lifecycle of Oracle Retail applications: deployment, development, support, strategic enhancements, and version upgrades.
- Proven ability to plan and execute complex Oracle Retail upgrade paths with minimal downtime.
- Compliance & Security:
- Hands-on experience with SOX, PCI, and internal security standards.
- Proven expertise in implementing Oracle Advanced Security Option (ASO) with Transparent Data Encryption (TDE).
- System Monitoring & Performance Optimization:
- Proficiency in tuning high-volume Oracle databases using tools such as AWR, ASH, ADDM, and tkprof.
- Experience with proactive system monitoring and troubleshooting using Splunk, CA UIM, Broadcom Spectrum, AppDynamics, and Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM).
- Strong command of UNIX shell scripting for automation and system management.
- Disaster Recovery & High Availability:
- Skilled in building and maintaining robust Disaster Recovery (DR) environments.
- Ensures high availability, transactional integrity, and operational continuity across distributed retail systems.
- Leadership & Collaboration:
- Proven leadership in managing global teams and providing 24x7 production support.
- Experience with Oracle ERP modules including RPOS, AR, AP, GL, PO, and INV.
- Strong documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- A deep understanding of various database platforms (e.g., Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and their functionalities.
- Advanced knowledge of SQL and its various dialects for querying, manipulating, and managing databases
- Strong skills in database design, normalization, and data modeling techniques.
- Expertise in identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks in database systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve database issues.

Actual starting pay is determined by a number of factors, including relevant skills, qualifications, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual incentive as well as long-term incentives.
