Job description

Chief Correspondent, Southeast Asia
Location: Bangkok or Jakarta

Company Overview

Thomson Reuters is the leading source of intelligent information for the world's businesses and professionals. We combine industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial and risk, legal, tax and accounting, intellectual property and science and media markets, powered by the world's most trusted news organization.

Position Summary

We are seeking a top-notch correspondent to report on big stories of the day in Southeast Asia, and deliver sophisticated enterprise stories that make an impact and set Reuters apart. The correspondent would be based in either Bangkok or Jakarta.

From the political uncertainty in junta-ruled Thailand and Myanmar's uneasy transition from dictatorship to the sophisticated financial markets of Singapore and the rise of middle classes in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, Southeast Asia offers some of the world's most colorful and dynamic stories. A combined market of some 640 million people across 11 countries, this region is bigger than North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, the euro zone, the Middle East or North Africa. Some of Southeast Asia's commodity-dependent economies have been hit hard by the resources bust but others are forging ahead: these include Vietnam, not just an emerging economy but also an increasingly important ally of the United States as tensions rise in the South China Sea, and the Philippines, whose crime-busting new president is already making waves. All this is ample grist for a rich range of insightful stories that can help global readers and investors better understand this complex but important region.

The chief correspondent should have a strong grasp of emerging markets, experience covering political strife and a passion for being first with a story. The successful candidate will travel across Southeast Asia to work with colleagues covering major events and breaking news, from corruption scandals to elections and natural disasters, which means he/she must be an excellent storyteller, a fast writer and a strong team player. He/She will also be expected to come up with smart follow-up stories that explain and shed new light on events, and always have a pipeline of innovative and investigative enterprise stories in the works. You must have a track record of delivering agenda-setting long-form journalism to be considered for this role, and proven experience telling stories through data and document trawls would be a strong advantage.

The chief correspondent will also work closely with photographers, TV producers and graphics journalists to enrich his/her stories. Front-of-camera and picture-taking experience would be an added advantage.
