This position will be a part of the Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) Domain. GTS is a prime contractor and system integrator delivering smarter and safer solutions across Australia and New Zealand's public transport, rail and road networks.
GTS has been awarded a Contract from the Consortium (comprised of MTR, John Holland and UGL) building the Sydney Metro North West Rail project for Transport for NSW. Thales Australia will design and deliver the Central Control System (CCS), and Communications system (COM).
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
System Engineering covers the various activities associated with the development and support of a product or system. System engineering is a multidisciplinary approach including all the technical efforts required to design, develop, validate and support a range of system solutions, i.e. the processes, products and skills needed to meet the customer's requirements. All these efforts need to be closely coordinated and supported throughout the system life cycle. In addition to multidisciplinary skills in hardware, software and expertise in the different specialist engineering fields and technologies, the system engineer also has a broad understanding of the fields of application concerned.

The Systems Engineer will work other Systems Engineers to devise, develop and maintain reliable and economically viable solutions to meet the needs of our customers.
On the SMNW the Role of the Systems Engineer for Interface Management is specifically focused on managing the System Interfaces and Civil Interfaces for CCS and COM, and coordinate with Thales Hong Kong and Thales Spain.

RESPONSIBILITIES (Key accountabilities and responsibilities)
The Systems Engineer is responsible for performing requirements analysis, technical studies, design tasks, systems integration, verification and engineering support activities to provide new and upgraded systems for THALES projects and bids. Key areas of responsibility are:
 Complete assigned tasks in projects, bids and R&D programs including:
o The conduct of requirements analysis based upon the user/customer requirements and capabilities of the core technology components.
o The analysis of alternatives and development of functional and physical solutions, including test or demonstration cases.
o The decomposition of selected architecture into sub-systems and/or elements.
o The implementation and verification of solutions.
o The production of engineering reports, specification and design documents.
o The verification of architectures and solutions against established requirements.
o The presentation and demonstration of solutions to customer representatives.
 Effectively plan and execute engineering activities so as to enable successful completion of those activities.
 Work within integrated product teams to ensure the successful development and implementation of related engineering programs (eg. Installation, EMI/EMC, Safety, Security, Environmental, Production, ILS).
 Keep abreast of technology developments and provide recommendations and advice on technology selection and R&D activities.
 Attend and participate in regular departmental and project meetings.
 Attend and participate in technical reviews (both internal and external).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
 Occasional interstate and overseas travel may be required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
QUALIFICATIONS
• Degree in System Engineering or related discipline
• Hold or be eligible for membership of Engineers Australia.
• Demonstrated engineering competencies required for admission to CPEng status by Engineers Australia are highly desirable.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
 Sound fundamental knowledge of SCADA and/or Communication systems
 Experience deploying one or more large scale SCADA and/or Communication solutions
 Previous experience of working on Transport projects:
 In the rail corridor
 Previous Brownfield & Greenfield environment experience
 Experience in most/all of the following technologies (design, interface and installation)
 SCADA,
 CCTV,
 Public Address System (PAS),
 Passenger Information Display System (PIDS),
 Security and Communication systems,
 Telephony,
 Digital Advertising,
 Security Access Control,
 IT (LAN/WAN) Network Design and Installation
 Sound fundamental knowledge of computing & electronic systems, including deployment design, and installation principles and practices
 Able to interpret and analysis drawings and technical documents
 Understanding of data buses and protocols, including CAN and Ethernet
