Sr. Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer
El Segundo (Los Angeles County) Bachelor's Degree Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering
Job description
Description
The Role
The Sr. Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer will be supporting the design, build, and test of aerodynamic test properties in coordination with the Aerodynamics Engineering team. Tesla places a strong emphasis on the optimization of the aerodynamics of its vehicles, not only for efficiency and range, but for wind noise as well. This enhanced priority empowers the aerodynamicists to push boundaries further. Achieving this requires working very closely with the Design group, and other engineering groups, ensuring that maximum performance is achieved with minimal compromise to other attributes.
The ability to interact well and fit into a small, highly motivated, multi-functional team that is working in a rapid, simultaneous engineering environment is essential. The role offers the rare opportunity to participate in the development of new and genuinely cutting edge vehicles, so enthusiasm and knowledge of cars is advantageous. You must have a genuine passion for engineering the best electric vehicles in the world. Without that, what we do will seem too hard. You must want to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial company. We are building real products -- not presentations. This must excite you.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate must have the ability to meet tight deadlines, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be detail oriented, and have the ability to work independently. He/she must establish and maintain a professional working relationship with external and internal teams including model makers, machinists, aerodynamicists, and hardware and software engineers.
Typical job duties may include but are not limited to the following:
· Create build plans for wind tunnel hardware and test properties that align with the aerodynamicists’ test plans and program deliverables. Identify and secure resources to build test properties.
· Execute build plans by designing, releasing, and coordinating the build of test properties for wind tunnel and on-vehicle tests.
· Perform hand calculations and FEA to justify mechanical design decisions for models.
· Assist in developing and validating novel airflow management features and systems on full size and scale test hardware.
· Work with engineers, suppliers, model makers, and fabricators to create, assemble, instrument, and test high fidelity wind tunnel models and physical mockups.
· Innovate, develop and improve processes continuously.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree or post-graduate qualification, or equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
· 5 years background in aerodynamic design and optimization or a qualification in aerodynamics, aerospace engineering, aeronautical engineering, physics, or mechanical engineering.
· Familiarity with common aerodynamic measurement systems like pressure sensing and load cell hardware along with LabView or similar data acquisition system.
· Expertise in complex surface geometry creation, simplification, and data management within CAD software - preferably CATIA v5 and Enovia VPM.
· Experience with wind tunnel testing, either at model scale or full scale.
· Experience with track testing, including instrumentation, data acquisition and processing.
· Must be willing to travel 10% of working days to support on track and tunnel testing.
