Manufacturing Engineer, Powertrain Remanufacturing
About Tesla
Tesla’s goal is to accelerate the world’s transition to electric mobility with a full range of increasingly affordable electric cars. California-based Tesla designs and manufactures EVs, as well as EV powertrain components for partners such as Toyota and Daimler. Model S is the world’s first premium sedan to be engineered from the ground up as an electric vehicle. Model S was named Motor Trend’s prestigious 2013 Car of the Year, achieved the best safety score of any car ever tested by the NHTSA, and Consumer Reports is calling it the best car it has ever tested.
Tesla Motors is committed to hiring and developing top talent from across the world for any given discipline. Our world-class teams operate with a non-conventional automotive product development philosophy of high inter-disciplinary collaboration, flat organizational structure, and technical contribution at all levels. You will be expected to challenge and to be challenged, to create, and to innovate. These jobs are not for everyone, you must have a genuine passion for producing the best vehicles in the world. Without passion, you will find what we're trying to do too difficult.
Our Mission
Tesla Motors designs and sells highly efficient, high-performance electric cars. Our cars combine style, acceleration, and handling with advanced technologies that make them among the quickest and the most energy-efficient cars on the road.
The Role
Develop, implement, and optimize the remanufacture of Tesla parts and systems (including batteries and drivetrains). Interact with Tesla technicians and engineers to develop, implement, and continually improve refurbishment processes, equipment, and procedures, and help integrate lessons learned into new products. Optimize product flow though the repair/refurbishment process, which may include line layout, tool and fixture selection, ergonomic study, equipment design and implementation, and other relevant factors. Interact with design, manufacture, test, and quality engineers to identify the root cause of in-house and field failure issues, resolve problems, improve re-manufacturability, and implement continual improvement. Interact with customers and field service engineers to identify and resolve new issues.
The goal is to minimize remanufacturing costs, while optimizing quality and yield. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her hands-on and analytical abilities, organization skills, and attention to detail. He/She is self-motivated, and appreciates an environment where superior work is encouraged, noticed and rewarded.
Responsibilities
* Analyze, design, validate, and optimize remanufacturing processes to ensure safety while maximizing yield, capacity, and capability. Use cost effective means to drive exceptional levels of quality and productivity.
* Continually develop equipment, layout, and process, with an emphasis towards the following:
* Cost effectiveness – Maximizing yield, capacity, and capability.
* Safety – Equipment must be safe for human operators as well as the device under test.
* Robustness – The equipment must withstand a high number of cycles under rugged conditions.
* Documentation – Accurate and detailed documentation to facilitate repairs, upgrades, and replication efforts.
* Serviceability – Equipment should be easy to service and repair.
* Utilize Lean Manufacturing and 5S practices to refine layouts, material flow, waste reduction, and ergonomics.
* Monitor and audit manufacturing processes to ensure product specifications and standards are achieved.
* Apply technical knowledge to innovate – design and develop processes, tooling, equipment, and procedures.
Requirements
* Bachelor or Master degree in Engineering:
* 1-3 years experience in a manufacturing or service environment, preferably with electromechanical systems.
* Strong engineering skills (process development/improvement, troubleshooting, data analysis, etc.).
* Familiarity with electronic circuits and testing; experience with high voltage environments preferred.
* Strong team working skills at all levels of an organization; especially skilled at working with direct labor to understand challenges and work on developing optimal solutions using structured methods.
* Able to coordinate/lead cross-functional teams to meet targets with tight deadlines.
* Good understanding of process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews, cost reduction methodologies, BOMs and manufacturability.
* Previous experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) desired.
* Experience breaking down high-level (e.g. assembly level) performance issues into addressable action items.
* Capable of identifying critical process parameters, and applying statistics to process measurement and control.
* Strong skills with workplace software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, QuickBase). CAD, Enovia PLM, LabVIEW, and SAP a plus.
* Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
* Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
* Experience with verbal and pictorial documentation of manufacturing processes.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Well organized with meticulous attention to detail.
