About the Team:

Transmission Engineering are part of Telefnica UK Networks, and are responsible for the architecture, evolution, design and infrastructure capacity of our mobile core and access transmission networks.

From our high capacity dark fibre core, to our IP Ethernet backhaul network, we deliver innovative and class leading solutions utilising some of the latest and most exciting transmission and transport technologies. The role holder will work closely with counterparts in our suppliers` design teams to ensure cost effective design solutions.

Your Role:

Working with Architects and other designers within the Transport team, the role will provide architectural leadership on the specification, design, build and deployment of xWDM technologies, mostly focused on Telefnica UK`s backbone.

The WDM Architect will act as the technical authority on the WDM platform within the COO organisation in Telefnica UK, defining the strategy around evolution, service delivery and projects and ensuring that the current network and services are maintained as well as supporting design level activity
Responsibility
Role responsibilities include providing architectural leadership on the specification, design, capacity management, build and deployment into the production environment of WDM technologies.

The role will lead as the technical authority on the DWDM backbone network within Telefnica UK and lead the optical transport strategy. It will also provide the principles and process around the WDM network in terms of network topology configuration, acceptance and operations and deliver documented Network Architecture.

The WDM Architect will manage the relationship with suppliers in terms of roadmaps, RFPs, and projects ensuring that the network meets the capacity and functionality demands of the business.

The WDM Architect and will be proactive with recommending network changes to meet evolving business and technical requirements. He / she will work jointly with approved suppliers to understand the potential impact of end of life and end of support products to provide seamless service.

The role will also contribute to define overall transport strategy. It will also define principles and processes relating to network topology, configuration, acceptance and operations and deliver documented Network Architectures and Designs.

Skills and Experience:

-Experience in WDM engineering or operations within a large telecoms organisation or equipment vendor is essential.

-Technical knowledge at an architectural level of WDM and the Optical Transport Network (OTN). Technical knowledge of overlaying services such as IP/MPLS and their requirements on Transmission.

-Knowledge of carrier class xWDM platforms; ideally Ciena 6500.

-Direct experience in creating High Level and Low Level Designs and Scopes of Work applied to Mobile Transport Networks.

-Applicants will also ideally be degree level qualified, with significant experience of working in a telecommunications technical architecture role obtained from working within a network operator or equipment vendor.

-Deep understanding of the different elements that may be part of a mobile operator`s backhaul network covering 2G, 3G and 4G services over a variety of transport technologies such as Ethernet and IP.

-Candidates should possess a flexible and logical approach with demonstrable skills in solving complex technical problems. They also need to be results oriented with outstanding self-reliance, resourcefulness and initiative coupled with an ability to communicate complex concepts simply and effectively across different teams.

Desirable criteria:

-Knowledge of optical management systems and optical planning tools.
-Experience of BT`s Managed Ethernet Access Service (MEAS)/IP VPN products, or solutions based on BT`s 21C network.

-Experience of designing mobile backhaul networks for Ericsson and Nokia Radio Access Networks would be highly advantageous.

-Experience of Nokia (Alcatel) 7750 SR and 7705 SAR environments.

-Experience in designing backhaul solutions incorporating CPRI or xWDM Cloud RAN based mobile access is desirable.
