Job description

This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in law without going to university. If successful, you will join a 226 year old firm with solicitors who are experts in their field, receiving one to one training on a daily basis.

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to study for nationally recognised qualifications which could lead to you becoming a solicitor in the future. You will also be joining a close knit office environment with friendly and approachable people.

What work will I be doing? What duties and responsibilities will I have?

You will join the general practice department and will cover a wide range of legal issues from litigation, wills, probate, trusts, property law and family law. We will provide you with a comprehensive training programme so that you have all the skills you need when you join your supervisor. From then on, your supervisor will allocate work to you at an appropriate level, increasing the complexity as you become more confident. By the end of the apprenticeship your duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Drafting basic correspondence to clients
- Carrying out legal research
- Assisting your supervisor with case files
- Arranging and Attending conferences with counsel
- Attending court hearings when appropriate
- Drafting letters of instruction
- Collating and creating bundles
- Attending departmental training sessions

The ideal candidate will have the confidence to deal with various individuals and groups. The type of matters the department work on can, at times, be emotionally challenging. You will need to be resilient and have excellent people skills.

Training to be provided?
On the job training through working alongside experienced staff
A competency based qualification to demonstrate you have the skills required to carry out the job. These are assessed by breaking down the contents of the jobs within your specific occupation into tasks called units of competences and will be measured through observations, assessments and witness testimony.
A technical qualification that includes theoretical knowledge required in an occupation and underpins the knowledge required for the competencies.

Remuneration
- £3.50/h + Paralegal training costs + annual performance bonus
