Job Summary:
A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join Smith and Nephew in this newly created position within the UK New Product Development (NPD) team working as a Systems Engineer. You will report into the NPD Project Manager or Principle Engineer, the Systems Engineer will have responsibility for providing guidance and direction to project teams on the design and implementation of overall system architectures. The successful candidate will assist the team in bringing together component sub-systems into a whole and ensuring that those sub-systems function together on complex electro-mechanical medical devices. The Systems Engineer will serve as an authority on system engineering approaches to designing and developing complex medical devices.

What will the job involve?
The Systems Engineer will act as a system engineering lead on product development projects. The successful candidate will provide system engineering technical guidance to product development teams in the design and development of medical devices. You will be supporting complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved technologies or methods of application. The work you undertake is expected to result in the development of new or refined technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and or scientific methods. You will enjoy working with cross-functional teams to define system requirements that are appropriate, realizable, and testable whilst contributing to risk management activities.
The Systems Engineer will be seen as an example of engineering excellence applying technical rigor in problem solving and analysis. You will have a passion for sharing knowledge as you may be required to mentor and teach less experienced members of the engineering team.
You will partner with Manufacturing Engineering to assist in developing test methods, equipment acquisition for new product testing, validations/qualifications, statistical analysis of date for significance, and other documented requirements for quality objectives.
You will be able to demonstrate positive role model behavior and the ability to work within a diverse team environment.

Desired profile

Qualifications:

Degree Educated in appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical or Biomedical Engineering) required.

The successful candidate will possess:

Significant relevant new product development, requirements management, risk management, verification & validation, and technical leadership experience within an FDA regulated industry required.

Technical experience with electrical medical equipment with embedded software controls preferred.

Technical experience with sterile disposable medical devices preferred.

Medical device manufacturing experience preferable.

Experience in system integration testing, system testing, design verification and documentation.

Knowledgeable in design for EMC/EMI requirements.

Ability to generate engineering requirements and specifications from marketing input.

Previous experience of managing external suppliers.

Please note there may be the requirement to travel throughout the EU & Internationally up to 20% of the time to co-ordinate project activities.
