SUMMARY:

The Navio surgical system employs robotic technology for orthopedic applications. It incorporates optical tracking and custom control hardware with proprietary software to provide precision bone sculpting.

The primary responsibilities of this position are divided between support of the current Navio product, and development of the next generation system. The engineer will become expert on the current product offerings, and will contribute to ongoing development efforts. The scope encompasses design, development and testing of hardware, firmware, and software; specification development; and system integration for both existing and new products. The engineer will work with suppliers and manufacturers to develop custom component. The engineer will also provide support internally to resolve Operations issues or to investigate Service incidents. Experience in a medical device development or manufacturing environment is preferred as all work is performed within a change control framework, and includes the creation of, and compliance with, requirements and standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Design, development, and documentation of products. Products include those identified for external customers as well as those for internal customers (Production, R&D, V&V).

Investigates new technologies for integration into new products; contributes in new product planning.

Develops testing procedures for both external compliance testing and internal production testing; occasionally participates in monitoring such testing

Provides technical support to other groups as required to bring product successfully through commercialization, helps maintain existing products and supports vendor technical requirements.

Perform sustaining engineering functions to maintain existing products

Understands Smith & Nephew design control process and completes documentation in accordance with these procedures

Discloses inventions for patent application and supports their prosecution and defense

REQUIREMENTS:

Travel Domestic - Up to 10%

Education A minimum of a B.S. in Electrical or Robotics Engineering (or equivalent)

Licenses/Certifications n/a

Experience A minimum of 3 years practical engineering experience, preferably in the medical device industry.

Competencies

* Experience in analog and digital design.

* Experience in sensor integration.

* Experience with microcontrollers and real-time programming

* Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout sofware (Altium preferred)

* Proficiency with C, C++, and scripting languages

* Working familiarity with standards for product design, development, and testing (such as IEC 60601, IEC 60950)

* Developing software for Linux

* Hardare (sensor, motor) integration

* Wired and wireless communication protocols and devices

* Power

* Selection of suitable materials for medical use
