Job Description
If you're a graduate who's gained some valuable commercial experience, Shell's Trader Development Programme (TDP) could equip you to work in one of the world's most entrepreneurial and exhilarating professional environments.
Why choose Shell?
Our traders can express their individual intellect and commercial flair but with the backing of a business that's been globally successful for more than 100 years. Through trading natural gas, power, crude oil, oil products, environmental products and freight – equivalent to around 13 million barrels of oil every single day – our global trading teams have the power to shape Shell's market position and make a huge impact on our profitability.
Today's Talent. Tomorrow's Traders
The Shell TDP is a dynamic, individualized programme like no other. Typically, it takes 2-3 years to complete but no two trainees follow the same route. We'll assess your strengths, weaknesses, experience and aptitude and then tailor a rotational programme that allows you to develop the competences you need –both to meet the requirements of the trading desk you're assigned to today and to be an accomplished, all-round trader tomorrow.
You'll be working alongside, and learning from, some of the best traders in the business; tapping into a wealth of insight and experience. Areas of trading you could be involved in include: crude oil, oil products, natural gas, power and environmental products.
There are regular performance reviews and assessments to review your progress and support your development with the right level of coaching and feedback. Along the way, you'll sharpen your ability to analyze markets and manage risk and learn how to successfully negotiate and structure deals – everything you'll need to apply for a permanent trading role with us on completion.
We're recruiting in Houston, TX
What makes a great trader?
Whilst energy trading is a hugely dynamic and commercially challenging environment, there's no room here for big egos or uncompromising characters.
Yes, you'll always be looking to out maneuver the market and outpace the competition, but the decisions you make will be considered and the risks you take calculated. You'll follow the letter and the spirit of the relevant legislation. You'll work with honesty, integrity and respect.
We value perceptive people with versatile interpersonal skills. Team dynamics constantly change, so it's vital you can adapt your communication style to suit the diverse range of people you're seeking to persuade and influence. It's important you're fluent in English, as well as the language of the market you're operating in.
If there's one thing that sets apart our very best traders, it's their commerciality. They're numerate, analytical and highly enterprising with the curiosity to keep seeking out new opportunities to make money. We look for men and women who can digest wide amounts of information from different sources and synthesize it to form trading strategies – people who move easily between a micro and macro view.
You don't need trading experience. Your degree is probably in economics, finance, marketing, engineering or a similarly numerate discipline. You probably work in finance, accountancy, banking, FinTech, in a trading environment or perhaps in a refinery. We're also keen to hear from people currently in an entrepreneurial, tech or start-up setting or with energy experience. That said, we're open-minded. If you have the personal qualities we're looking for and natural numeracy, don't be deterred from talking to us.
