Objective
SAP Altiscale is looking for a creative software performance engineer who wants to improve the performance of distributed systems in the world of Big Data to join their team in Palo Alto, CA. You will be part of Altiscale team at SAP to drive the Big Data Services performance improvements. Your focus will be evaluating the performance of applications running on Hadoop and Spark clusters running on commodity hardware inside Linux docker containers. It is a great opportunity to work in a team built around great engineers with decades of experience designing and running big data applications on distributed systems at Yahoo, Google, LinkedIn, and SAP and improve performance, reliability and scalability of open-source ecosystem for big data (including Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Linux, and Docker).

Expectations and Tasks
• Performance evaluations of Apache Hadoop and Spark clusters.
• Performance evaluation of Linux docker containers on physical machines, including file system, dmcrypt and networking subsystems.
• Work with engineering and operations teams to collect requirements and production logs, improve existing performance benchmarking suite and develop new tests (performance, scalability, reliability, etc.).
• Improve existing performance metrics; design and implement new ones.
• Analyze performance tradeoffs in product/feature/architecture.

Education and Qualifications
• BS in computer science or related technical field. MS or PhD preferred
• PhD or MS research in distributed systems, operating systems or networking with performance evaluation is a plus
• 2+ years of hands-on experience in software development using Java, C++, or Go and Ruby, Python, or Perl. Experience with code management (for example, git) and CI (for example, jenkins)
• 2+ years of hands-on experiences on various performance and load assurance methodology and practices, including performance Testing/Profiling/Tuning
• Experience with Linux debugging and profiling tools
• Experience to assess trade-offs between CPU, memory, and I/O load in distributed systems.
• Experience with REST APIs and internet protocols
• Expertise in identifying performance bottlenecks and troubleshooting performance issues in distributed systems.
• Experience with SQL and relational database, in memory database is a plus.
• Must be able to work onsite in Palo Alto, CA
