While the need for a Data Warehouse does not go away, the scenarios and opportunities for "big data" are growing massively - the next-generation of a Data Warehouse must show how it can embrace Hadoop and the "big data" challenge without losing its core competencies as the trusted source of information within a company. The idea of a "data lake" based on Hadoop technology as a first-level persistence for all corporate and external data is becoming more and more popular. SAP BW offers a highly integrated approach to Data Warehousing from data acquisition, data lifecycle management to architected analytic data marts. SAP BW, edition for HANA, offers a scalable, high-performance solution based on the SAP HANA platform. Customers struggle to extend this integrated approach of BW to the Hadoop "data lake" and the scenarios envisioned for this technology. Such integration scenarios can be e.g. a consumer products company storing video files out of the internet in Hadoop. Batch jobs in Hadoop analyze the video files - the result is structured information such as the number of times the company logo is visible. The real value of such data stands out once it can be combined with sales data, marketing data…, i.e. data residing in the Data Warehouse. So the execution of the video analysis and its result (structure, content, etc.) should actually be part of the data management processes of the Data Warehouse - only this guarantees a reliable and consistent consumption of the data. This takes "big data" analytics from the niche of experts to a broad audience.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

The thesis should analyze such integration scenarios with a focus on data acquisition based on SAP BW, edition for HANA, and Hadoop. It should analyze the current technologies and toolset involved, its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. The thesis should include not only theoretical work, customer interviews and interaction, but also the practical implementation of example scenarios leveraging Hadoop, HANA and BW. The results of the thesis should be concrete implementation recommendations for customer and/or for SAP for future developments. The work will be done in a team of experienced software architects of the SAP HANA and BW development organization. We are looking for a student familiar with the principals of Data Warehousing and knowledge of the Hadoop technology and tools. Know-how of SAP HANA and SAP BW are useful, but can also be acquired and deepened during the course of the thesis.
